The Big Red fell 21-20 to the No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes last Friday in Columbus. Cornell trailed 13-3 after four matches but climbed back into it, taking a 20-18 lead into the final bout of the dual between Fernandes and Nick Feldman. Feldman recorded a takedown in the last minute to break a 3-3 tie and secure the dual-deciding win.Â

Shapiro (technical fall), Ramirez (decision), Forca (fall) and Cardenas (decision) pulled Cornell back into the contest.Â

The Big Red took down No. 13 Virginia Tech 24-13 on Sunday at Newman Arena. The Big Red won six of 10 matches, and five wrestlers took down ranked opponents. Ramirez, Foca and Cardenas earned bonus points for the Big Red with major decisions. Cardenas clinched the dual for Cornell with an 11-1 win over Andy Smith.Â

Fernandes capped the dual with a 6-3 overtime victory over Jimmy Mullen.Â

Shapiro, the top recruit in the 2023 class, beat two ranked opponents across the two duals. He took down then-No. 12 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) 15-0 by technical fall and No. Bryce Andonian (Va. Tech) by injury default. It was his second win against Andonian this season (the first came in Las Vegas).Â

Cornell moved from No. 10 to No. 9 in this week's NWCA Divison I Coaches Poll. The Big Red has beaten three ranked teams this season: No. 15 Pittsburgh and No. 13 Virginia Tech.Â

Five of the Big Red's starters are unbeaten in duals so far this season, including Vito Arujau (2-0), Shapiro (5-0), Ramirez (5-0), Foca (5-0) and Cardenas (6-0).Â

Ramirez (12-1) and Cardenas (12-2) are tied with Benny Baker (12-8) for the team lead in wins.Â

Ramirez has been one of the most dominant wrestlers in the nation this season. Ranked No. 3 at 165 by InterMat, the two-time NCAA qualifier has beaten five ranked wrestlers, including Iowa State's David Carr, a four-time All-American and a 2021 national champion.Â

Ramirez's only loss this season came to Oregon State's Izzak Olejnik in the 165 final at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Olejnik (15-0) is ranked No. 2 at his weight by InterMat.Â

Cardenas has beaten six ranked opponents, including two at the Cliff Keen Invite. He has won his last five matches.Â

Ramirez (2nd), Ungar (2nd), Cardenas (4th), Cornella (8th) and Fernandes (8th) reached the podium at the Cliff Keen Invite. Cornell finished in sixth place as a team with 93.5 points.Â

An All-American at 174 last season, Foca debuted at 184 in November. Since going 1-2 at the Cliff Keen Invite, he has won four straight matches, all against ranked opponents.Â

Six 2023 NCAA qualifiers returned for Cornell, including Arujau, Ungar, Cornella, Ramirez, Foca and Cardenas. Foca, Cardenas and Arujau earned All-American status; Arujau won a national title.Â
