Wrestling Falls to No. 23 Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The No. 23 Lehigh Mountain Hawks used a late rally to defeat the No. 9 Cornell wrestling team 17-16 on Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Big Red fell to 4-3 (1-1 EIWA) and suffered its first EIWA loss this season, while the Mountain Hawks won their second straight dual to improve to 2-3 (2-0 EIWA). 

The Big Red built a 16-8 lead by winning five of the first seven matches, with victories from Vince Cornella (141), Ethan Fernandez (149), Meyer Shapiro (157), Julian Ramirez (165) and Chris Foca (184). Lehigh won the last three matches of the dual, securing the victory with Luke Stanich's 2-0 decision over Brett Ungar

The Mountain Hawks have won four of the last five meetings in the series. 

Cornell Notes and Highlights

  • Shapiro (6-0), Ramirez (6-0) and Foca (6-0) remained unbeaten in duals this season. 

  • Ramirez won his fifth straight match with his victory over Jake Logan. He leads Cornell with 13 victories this season. 

  • Ramirez earned his team-leading eighth bonus-point victory of the season. It was the Big Red's only bonus-point victory of the day. 

  • With his 5-1 win over No. 16 Malyke Hines, Cornella won his second straight match against a ranked opponent.
