ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's basketball team (6-7, 0-1 Ivy League) dropped its Ivy League opener to the Princeton Tigers (11-3, 1-0 Ivy League) by a final score of 79-38 on Saturday afternoon from Newman Arena. Cornell's 38 points are the lowest that the Big Red has scored since netting 37 in a 75-37 decision to the Tigers at Princeton on Feb. 4, 2021.
Emily Pape led the Big Red offense with 12 points and nine rebounds, making it the sixth-straight game the sophomore has had double figures. That mark also matches Pape's career-high of consecutive double-figure performances that she hit twice during her freshman season a year ago.
Kaya Ingram and
Summer Parker-Hall followed Pape with eight points apiece in the loss for the Big Red, who shot a season-low 25.5 percent from the field.
Madison St. Rose (20 points) and Kaitlyn Chen (15 points) led the Tigers offense in the win, as the tandem shot a combined 16-of-26 from the field. Ellie Mitchell also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for Princeton, who extended its winning streak over Cornell to 12 straight games.
First Quarter
- The Tigers drew first blood, jumping out to a 10-1 with five apiece coming from Kaitlyn Chen and Madison St. Rose to force a Big Red timeout. Summer Parker-Hall had the lone point over the stretch via the free-throw line.
- Cornell's offensive woes would continue after the timeout, as it went scoreless for over four minutes, allowing Princeton to stretch its lead up to 15. But Cornell's season-leading scorer would break the drought for the Big Red offense, knocking down an acrobatic layup followed by a three-pointer just a step left from the top of the key on back-to-back trips down the floor to make it 18-6.
- Both teams hit a stalemate after the Pape three, going scoreless for almost two minutes until Mari Bickley picked up her first bucket of the afternoon with 50 seconds to go. Bickley's points were the last of the quarter for either team, as Princeton held a 20-6 advantage after one.
Second Quarter
- After a rough first quarter, the Big Red offense came alive thanks to Pape, as the sophomore put together a layup and step-back three-pointer to spark a 5-0 run, cutting the deficit to nine. Cornell's defense also clamped down after allowing 52.9 percent shooting over the first ten minutes, forcing the Tigers to go 0-of-4 from the field while forcing two turnovers over 2:47.
- Despite the run, the Big Red could not sustain the momentum, as Princeton put together a 10-0 run with four Tigers netting points, with five coming from St. Rose to build its largest cushion at the time at 19 points. Cornell broke its scoreless streak via Clarke Jackson finding a cutting Kaya Ingram, who slid by three Tigers defenders and got a friendly bounce into the cylinder to stop the scoreless streak at over six minutes and become the second Big Red athlete to hit a shot. Ingram would add one from a charity stripe to secure the three-point play to make the score 33-14.
- Parker-Hall and Ingram would have the last points of the half for the Big Red, as each knocked down two from the free throw line to put Cornell within 17. However, the Tigers had the final laugh of the opening 20 minutes, as Chen knocked down a fade-away jumper with two seconds left on the clock to head into the locker room with a 37-18 advantage.
Third Quarter
- Cornell opened the scoring about a minute in as Parker-Hall drove around her defender for the reverse layup. Princeton immediately answered Parker-Hall's bucket with a 5-0 run before Parker-Hall netted another bucket, this time being a turnaround jumper to put Cornell within 20.
- Princeton continued to put the pressure on, putting together an 11-1 over five minutes to grab a 30-point advantage. Azareya Kilgoe stopped the scoring drought for the Big Red with a driving layup off a handoff from Rachel Kaus.
- Despite the Kilgoe bucket, Princeton had the last strike of the third, as Katie Thier netted a putback layup to keep Cornell's deficit at 30 heading into the final ten minutes.
Fourth Quarter
- Rachel Kaus opened the scoring in the final corner for either side by netting her first points on a turnaround jumper. Kaus' bucket made her the fifth Big Red athlete to score points on the afternoon. Ingram fed off the momentum of Kaus' bucket a possession later, driving into the teeth of the Tigers' defense and getting a friendly roll into the cylinder with one second left on the shot while adding a free throw a second later to push the deficit to 27.
- Ingram's bucket steered momentum back into the Tigers' favor as it burst out to another scoring run of the 6-0 variety to grab its largest lead at 34. Cornell's scoring drought would end a possession later on a pull-up jumper by Kilgoe. Emily Pape fed off Kilgoe's jumper two possessions later with her first points since the first half on a nifty hook shot off a pass from Vivienne Knee.
- Princeton's offense continued to pile it on the Big Red after the Pape hook shot with a 13-1 run to go up by 34 until Sarah Hathorn scored her first points of the season on a three-pointer that knocked off the backboard for the last bucket of the game.
Big Red Notables
