Leahy's Goal Enough In Field Hockey's 1-0 Win Over La Salle

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior Grace Leahy's goal was all the Cornell field hockey team needed in a dominant 1-0 victory over La Salle on Tuesday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red (4-8) held dominant edges in shots (22-0) and penalty corners (8-1) in snapping its three-game losing skid, while the Explorers slipped to 7-7 after suffering its third consecutive defeat.

Leahy's 19th career goal pushed her into the school's top 20 career scoring list (19th with 41 points) when she ripped a rocket past Abby Boggs midway through the third, snapping a scoreless tie. Cornell forced Boggs to make 12 saves to keep the visitors in the game, as Cornell had relentless pressure on La Salle's defense all afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Martha Broderick, meanwhile, did not face a shot in securing her fifth career solo shutout.

The Big Red had an onslaught of attacking hockey in the first 30 minutes despite not being rewarded on the scoreboard. Cornell took 11 shots and had five penalty corners, but Boggs turned away eight shots, including several of the impressive variety. Leahy finally broke the scoring drought at 37:43 when she dribbled through three defenders from the restraining line and blasted a backhand shot farside for the score.

Though the Big Red continued to apply pressure, it couldn't find an insurance goal. The Explorers, meanwhile, could not get anything going. It drew one penalty corner in the fourth, but could not get it stopped to attempt a shot.
