PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell field hockey team kept its Ivy League Tournament hopes alive as
Vivienne Mueller's overtime goal pushed the Big Red to a 3-2 overtime triumph over Penn on Saturday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field. Cornell improved to 5-8 (2-3 Ivy), while the Quakers fell to 3-9 (1-4 Ivy).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Martha Broderick made eight saves to collect the win for the Big Red, holding up despite seeing 14 shots to seven for Cornell. The visitors took advantage of their opportunities, however, as
Ashley Plzak and
Georgia Kelly each scored first quarter goals to put the Big Red out in front early. For Kelly, it was her first career score. Plzak and Mueller added assist for three-point days, while both
Grace Leahy and
Julia Ramsey also were credited with helpers.
Penn held a 12-4 edge in shots after a first quarter that saw the Big Red get out to a two-goal advantage. Plzak shocked the road crowd by finding the back of the net just 19 seconds in on a feed from Leahy, while the lead doubled less than seven minutes later when Ramsey fed Kelly in the eighth minute.
Livia Loozen and Julia Ryan evened the game with goals less than five minutes apart in the third and had the better of play, but Broderick was up to the task. She stopped the only shots on goal in the fourth, in overtime and in the second extra session.
