Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#6 Big Red Ties Mercyhurst, Wins Shootout

Erie, Pa. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team tied the Mercyhurst Lakers 0-0 on Friday night at Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Big Red and the Lakers played shootouts, with Cornell ultimately taking the shoot-out win. Cornell moved to 0-0-1 on the year, while the Lakers shifted to 1-5-1.

Sophomore goaltender Annelies Bergmann was strong in the net during the season opener, standing up to 34 opportunities by the Lakers and letting none get by. The third period proved to be her best, as she stopped 14 Laker-opportunities. Bergmann stood strong during the Mercyhurst power-play chances, killing both two-minute minors.

Cornell managed its fair-share of shots-on-goal in the game. The Big Red out-shot Mercyhurst 41-34, with junior forward Avi Adam leading that category with six of her own.

In overtime, the Lakers were initially awarded a goal that was rescinded, giving the Big Red new life. Both teams would fail to score for the remainder of the extra-time, resulting in a tie. Sophomore defender Piper Grober netted the lone shoot-out goal to give Cornell the win.
