Field Hockey Closes Out Dodson Field In Style, Tops Brown 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey team walked off Marsha Dodson Field for the final time in style, staying alive for the Ivy League Tournament after a spirited 3-2 victory over Brown on Friday afternoon. The Big Red improved to 6-8 (3-3 Ivy), while the Bears fell to 7-7 (3-3 Ivy).

Freshman Uma Käding scored twice in the second quarter to take the lead after falling behind early, and Georgia Kelly capitalized on a perfectly-executed corner with 7:49 remaining in regulation for what proved to be the game winner. Senior Claire Wolfe and sophomore Julia Ramsey and each had two assists in the penalty corner operation, with Wolfe climbing into the top five all-time with 22 helpers in her Big Red career. Senior Claire Vaughn assisted on Käding's second goal of the contest, a brilliant tip late in the first half.

Defensively, sophomore Martha Broderick made seven saves in picking up her 18th career victory in goal. That total now ranks sixth in a career in school history.

It was an even game in nearly every way, with Brown holding a 15-12 edge in shots and the two teams being even (9-9) in penalty corners. Entering the contest, the Bears led the nation in penalty corners earned per game. The Big Red was disciplined in the circle, and scored twice on set pieces itself.

Lexi Pellegrino got Brown on the board just 16 seconds before the end of the first period, tipping in a long ball from Lucy Adams to get the visitors on the board. At that point, Brown led the Big Red 4-0 in shots and 2-0 in corners.

The Big Red turned it up in the second, flipping those numbers and taking the lead going into the break. Käding's first goal came on a laser shot off a penalty corner with six minutes left in the half, then tipped in an insertion pass from Claire Vaughn to make it 2-1 less than three minutes later.

The Bears came into the second half roaring, knotting the score just 33 seconds into the half on a penalty corner. Broderick saved the initial shot by Katie McCallum, but the ball landed at the feet of Zoe Lawrence and was chipped into the goal.

It remained that was for more than 20 minutes of game time until Kelly's blast on a second corner attempt in succession proved to be the game winner. The Bears, needing the win in the Ivy tournament race, pulled their goalkeeper with three minutes left and drew three late corners, but Broderick saved one and two others were unsuccessfully put on goal. The Big Red celebrated on the field, taking pictures and enjoying its 85th and final victory on Dodson Field before its move to Game Farm Road complex next season.
