ITHACA, N.Y. --- Junior defensive back
Ian Applegate has been named CSFL Week 5 Defensive Player of the Week after his standout performance in the fourth quarter of a nail-biter game against St. Thomas Aquinas led the Big Red to its first win since week one of the season.
Applegate had four total tackles, one pass break-up and two interceptions in the game, but it was when those two interceptions took place that saved the game for Cornell.
With less than ten minutes left in the game, Cornell was down 18-23. St. Thomas Aquinas started its drive and was moving down the field at the STAC 47 yard-line when Applegate was able to pick off Ryan Kenny's pass and give the Big Red the ball back with good field position and a little over seven minutes left in regulation. Cornell's offense was then able to create a positive offensive drive that ended in an
Evan Nicholas rushing touchdown. The Big Red was then up 24-23 with just a minute and a half left in the game.
Kenny and the STAC offense was ready to take the field in need of just a field goal for the win. Four plays into the drive, Kenny tried to pass the ball to his left side and Applegate made a great move to cut off and intercept the pass, securing the narrow Cornell victory and earning him the title of CSFL Week 5 Defensive Player of the Week.
Evan Nicholas also made CSFL honors as he was named to the Week 5 CSFL Honor Roll after going 14-for-20 for 120 passing yards, one passing touchdown, 77 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the game.
