ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Ashley Plzak scored a fourth quarter goal and classmate
Martha Broderick made six saves in goal for Cornell, but No. 14 Princeton remained unbeaten in Ivy League play with a 3-1 victory over the Big Red on Friday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Tigers improved to 6-3 (3-0 Ivy), while the Big Red slipped to 3-6 (1-2 Ivy).
Beth Yeager had a goal and an assist and Talia Schenck found the back of the net twice for the Tigers, who held a 17-3 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage on corners. Ottillie Sykes was credited with an assist and Robyn Thompson made one save in the victory. The visitors scored single goals in the second, third and fourth periods to claim
The Big Red tested Princeton early with a penalty corner shot from
Georgia Kelly that was kicked away by Thompson, while Broderick was able to save the only shot that got to her in the first 15 minutes. The game stayed scoreless until Schenck backhanded in a rocket shot from outside that was challenged, but the goal was upheld upon review to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 19:42. That goal changed the tenor of the match, as the Tigers outshot the Big Red 10-1 over the middle two quarters. Yeager scored at the end of a tic-tac-toe corner midway through the third, and Schenck added an insurance goal on a great feed from Yeager into the circle. Schenck spun around to get herself in position with a charging Broderick out of the net to cut off the transition attack and made goal with seven minutes remaining.
Plzak got the home team on the board with her goal in the 57th minute on a nice feed down low by
Grace Leahy. She chipped home the shot past Thompson for her second score of the season and sixth of her career.
