Volleyball Upsets Yale For a Senior Night Win

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell Volleyball (14-9, 8-6 Ivy) stuns Yale (17-5, 12-2 Ivy) in a reverse sweep on Senior Night in Newman Arena heading into the Ivy League Tournament.

Cornell has not beat Yale since 2017 when they swept them at home and have only taken four sets from them since then.

"The best part of what we did was that we stayed disciplined, and we didn't get rattled in moments that we have against big team in the past." Head Coach Trudy Vande Burg said. "It was huge, it was a great win and I am so proud of them and I love that we are going into the conference tournament with a big win and confidence."

Tonight, two Cornellians recorded over 20 kills in the five-set win. Eliza Konvicka led the way with 22 kills, 16 digs and a block for her fourth double-double of the season.

Mackenzie Parsons hit for .541 with a career-best 21 kills while adding five blocks and four digs. Jaida Sione also had double digit kills with a career-best 15.

Doga Ozalp pitched in a career-best 64 assist and 10 digs for her seventh double-double this season.

The Big Red dug up 71 balls from the Bulldogs, four in double digits with 17 from Jackie Baker, 16 from Konvicka, 14 from Sarita Pomar and 10 from Ozalp.

The match was tied up 26 separate times with 12 lead changes.

First Set (25-27 Yale)

Cornell opened the match with back-to-back blocks from Sione/Carlo and a solo block from Carlo to spark a 11-4 run.

With Cornell up by eight (15-7) the Bulldogs start up their first run of the match to chip away at the lead and bring the match within two points (17-15).

The next nine points were traded evenly as the Big Red held their two-point lead at 21-19.

Yale then strung together a 5-1 run to take the lead for the first time at 22-23.

Two kills from Parsons brought it to the first set point at 24-23.

The Big Red made two errors to give Yale the second set point at 24-25.

Kohanihokuao Misipeka tied it up one last time at 25-25 before Yale won the set 25-27.

Second Set (24-26 Yale)

Carlo took the first point the of second set with a kill, but the Bulldogs responded with three straight points.

Parsons tied it up 5-5 with her sixth kill of the night.

Yale pulled ahead in the middle of the match 17-11. Cornell slowly chipped away the deficit until a kill from Konvicka sparked a 5-1 run to take the lead at 23-22.

Yale added two points to bring it to set point before Parsons threw in a solo block to tie it up 24-24.

Yale won the second straight set with extra points 24-26. Yale up 2-0.

Third Set (25-23 Cornell)

The Bulldogs opened the third set with a 9-4 lead.

But Cornell came back with a 7-1 run that included three Parsons kills and one each from Konvicka and Sione to take the lead at 11-10.

Sammie Engel came in after the middle of the set was knotted up and added an ace.

Yale notched three consecutive points followed by two Parsons kills and a Parsons/Ozalp block to take back the lead 19-18.

The teams tied it up two more times before a service ace from Megan Bickel brought it to set point, 24-21.

Betsy Goodenow added two kills, but Konvicka put away the final kill to take the third set 25-23.

Fourth Set (25-18 Cornell)

With a 4-0 run at the beginning of the set, capped by a Carlo/Ozalp block, the Big Red started with a 7-3 lead in the fourth.

16 points later, Yale knots up the set at 13-13.

Cornell uses a 10-2 run with three Sione kills, three Konvicka kills and a Carlo/Konvicka block to pull ahead of the Bulldogs with the biggest lead from either team at 23-15.

Konvicka and Parsons add two more kills to send the match to its fifth set.

Fifth Set (15-11 Cornell)

After five points the first five points of the set, the Big Red start a five-point run sparked by a Misipeka kill to take the lead at 8-2.

Yale tried to rally with a 5-2 run late in the set but could not over come the gap.

The match ended with a Misipeka/Parsons block to secure the victory for Cornell.

The Big Red will make its first appearance in the Ivy League Tournament on Nov. 22-23 at Dillon Gymnasium on the campus of Princeton University.

No.3 Cornell will play No.2 Yale at 7 p.m. on Friday Nov. 22. The winner of the match will play the winner of No.1 Princeton and No.4 Brown on Saturday at 6 p.m. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
