The Big Red Moves to 6-2 After a 19-3 Win Over UConn

ITHACA, N.Y.--- The Cornell women's polo team defeated the University of Connecticut in a dominant fashion 19-3 on Saturday night at the Oxley Equestrian Center. This win moves the Big Red to 6-2 on the season heading into its home tournament. 

Junior Lara Chong led Cornell in scoring with 13 goals. Freshman Naomi Marlough had four goals and fifth-year Isabelle Braden and senior Ava Ramachandran each notched one to close out the scoring.

"We're excited to get the win tonight as we prepare for our upcoming Field Invitational," said Peter B. Orthwein `68 Head Coach of Polo, Anthony Condo Jr. "Offensively we were clicking quite well, and our team chemistry is improving each time out."

FIRST CHUCKER

  • Lara Chong opened up the first chucker of scoring with two goals for Cornell.

  • Naomi Marlough followed up with one of her own to put the Big Red up 3-0 early.

  • Liz Leudesdorf added a goal for UConn to bring the score to 3-1.

  • Chong notched two more goals for Cornell to end the chucker with the Big Red in the lead 5-1.

SECOND CHUCKER

  • The second chucker proved to be a defensive one as only three goals were scored amongst both teams.

  • Chong opened up the second chucker with a goal.

  • Leudesdorf answered with one for UConn.

  • Isabelle Braden notched a goal to end the second chucker with Cornell in the lead 7-2. 

THIRD CHUCKER

  • Cornell scored six unanswered goals in the third chucker. Chong accounted for four goals and Marlough accounted for the other two. 

  • The third chucker ended with Cornell in the lead 13-2.

FOURTH CHUCKER

  • The fourth chucker began with five unanswered goals for Cornell. Chong was responsible for three, Marlough for one and Ava Ramachandran for one.

  • Ruby Hughes fought back for UConn notching a goal.

  • Chong closed out the game with one more goal securing Cornell's victory 19-3. 

"Looking forward to a positive showing next week to close out the fall season," said Condo Jr.

The Big Red will compete next on Thursday, Nov. 21 against the University of Kentucky at 8:00 p.m. in its home Bill Field Invitational.
