Danny Lokko scored twice in a wild final 10 minutes, aiding the Cornell men's soccer team to its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1977 with a 2-1 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon at a frigid Berman Field.
The 14th-seeded Big Red (14-3-1) advanced to the next round to face the No. 3 seed Syracuse next weekend in the third round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Championship.
Third Round vs Syracuse: A Syracuse counterattack in the final eight minutes after one of Cornell's best chances of the night was the difference as the Orange advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over the Big Red on Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium.
Cornell concluded its magical season at 14-4-1, while Syracuse improved to 16-2-4, avenging a regular season loss to the Big Red in the process.
Big Red Players To Watch
Alex Harris - The Ivy League Offensive Player of The Year, Cornell's first-ever, stands at 39 points on 17 goals and five assists, which puts him at fourth all-time points in a single-season and fifth all-time in goals in a Big Red season. The stand-out Cornellian produced his first-career hat-trick against Dartmouth, ushering the Big Red to a 3-0 victory. Harris has registered 11 multi-point games on the year and has been named Ivy League Offensive Player of The Week on four occasions.
Connor Miller - Miller has been a catalyst for the Big Red. He has registered 17 points coming on four goals and nine assists. Miller sets up his teammates for timely goals and has a knack for the moment, owning two game-winners for Cornell. The first-team All-Ivy recipient finished Ivy play tied for first-place in assists with nine, and sixth in points with 17.
Ryan Friedberg - Friedberg has played every minute in net for the Big Red this season. He has posted a 12-3-2 record to go along with eight shutouts. He has doubled his previous season-high in shutouts with that mark. Friedberg backs up a strong back-line with poise and focus. He has faced 142 shots this season, allowing just 17 to get by him (.726). He was named a first-team All-Ivy League selection.
Alioune Ka - Ka has been a reliable goal-scorer for the Big Red. He continues to be shifty in the offensive zone, consistently finding goals in timely situations. He currently holds 15 points on the year on six goals and three assists. Ka earned his way onto the first-team All-Ivy League list.
