Volleyball Set For Its First Ivy League Tournament Appearance

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell volleyball makes its first trip to the Ivy League Tournament on Friday at Dillon Gymnasium on the campus of Princeton University.

CORNELL'S PATH TO THE IVY TOURNAMENT

Cornell started the season 6-3 in non-conference play, the best start to a season since 2019.

The Big Red then went 8-6 in conference matches sweeping Columbia, Dartmouth and Penn. Cornell split meetings with Yale and Brown but fell in both meetings to Princeton and Harvard.

Going into the last weekend of matches Cornell was on the edge of the tournament in a battle between Brown, Penn and Harvard for the final two spots. Yale and Princeton were already guaranteed a spot with Yale looking to host.

Friday night, Cornell faced Brown at home, with a win the Big Red clinched a spot, with a loss Harvard had to lose to Penn for Cornell to get in. Brown beat Cornell in five long sets and Harvard lost to Penn in five as well. Cornell clinched a spot on Friday night.

Saturday night, Cornell hosted Yale for senior night. Yale stole the first two sets from the Big Red in extra points. Cornell snapped back and won the match in a reverse sweep. The win placed Cornell in the third seed and knocked Yale down to the second seed giving Princeton the hosting honor due to a head-to-head tiebreaker.

CORNELL'S NUMBERS

Camryn Carlo is ranked 29th nationally in blocks per set and first in the conference, averaging 1.33 per set.

Mackenzie Parsons is ranked 15th nationally in hitting percentage (.412). She is one of two Ivy League players with a hitting percentage above .400, (Laurece Abraham, Yale).

SCOUTING YALE

Yale won its third-straight Ivy League title and 12th in the last 16 seasons sharing with Princeton. The Bulldogs finished the regular season 12-2 in conference play.

Yale dropped their first Ivy road match of the season in their last match against Cornell. The Big Red and Bulldogs split meetings this season each winning in their home gym.

Yale is leading the Ivy in total points per set (17.47), team hitting percentage (.279), assists per set (12.49) and kills per set (14.10).

Individually, Carly Diehl leads in assists per set (10.58) and Cara Shultz leads in aces per set (0.47).

SCOUTING BROWN

Brown volleyball clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a 3-0 win at Columbia to end the regular season.

The Bears have earned a spot in the tournaments all three years of its existence. They have made it to the final match each of the past two years.

The Big Red and Bears split meetings this season each winning on the road.

Jessie Golden leads the league in digs with 374 (4.16 per set).

SCOUTING PRINCETON

Princeton won a share of the Ivy League title and hosting rights for the Ivy League Tournament. The Tigers' 20 Ivy titles are the most of any team in the conference, with Yale's 14 being the second most. The Tigers have earned a spot in the tournaments all three years of its existence.

Princeton is leading the Ivy in total blocks (229.5). Individually, Jackie Onyechi leads hitting percentage (.419) and Kamryn Chaney leads in kills with 392 total (4.40 per set) and points  per set with 5.15 and 392 total.

Kamryn Chaney earned the final Ivy League Player of the week honors after leading the Tigers to a weekend sweep with wins over Dartmouth and Harvard. Chaney averaged 5.0 kills per set (35 kills) with a .351 hitting percentage along with 3.0 digs per set (21 total) to go along with six blocks.

BROWN RECAP

Cornell fell to Brown in five sets on a record night for with three hitters with marks in the double-digits with Eliza Konvicka at the lead with 24 kills on a .346 hitting percentage, one shy of her career-best, four digs, two blocks and an ace.

Jaida Sione totaled a season-best 12 kills, two blocks and two digs as Camryn Carlo added to the attack with 11 kills on team best .417 hitting percentage and five blocks. Mackenzie Parsons added 9 kills on a .381% with Kohanihokuao Misipeka rounding out the offense with seven of her own.

The Big Red totaled 64 kills over the five sets with 54 assists coming from junior setter Doga Ozalp. Libero Sarita Pomar dug up a season-best 17 digs while adding five assists.

YALE RECAP

Cornell stunned Yale in a reverse sweep on Senior Night in Newman Arena heading into the Ivy League Tournament. Cornell had not beat Yale since 2017 when they swept them at home and had only taken four sets from them since then.

The Big Red out hit Yale 75-64 on a .288 team hitting percentage.

Two Cornellians recorded over 20 kills in the five-set win. Konvicka led the way with 22 kills, 16 digs and a block for her fourth double-double of the season. Parsons hit for .541 with a career-best 21 kills while adding five blocks and four digs. Sione also had double digit kills with a career-best 15.

Ozalp pitched in a career-best 64 assists and 10 digs for her seventh double-double this season.

The Big Red dug up 71 balls from the Bulldogs, four in double digits with 17 from Jackie Baker, 16 from Konvicka, 14 from Pomar and 10 from Ozalp. Baker's season-best 17 balls marked her sixth game with double-digit digs this season. Pomar dug up 14 balls marking her sixth consecutive match with double-digit digs.
