Wrestling Opens Home Slate With Two Events

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell wrestling opens their home slate with two events this weekend. The Big Red starts with a duel against Buffalo on Saturday afternoon then turn around to host the Big Red Invitational on Sunday morning.

DUAL INFORMATION FOR BUFFALO

Cornell wrestling will host the University at Buffalo for their home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 23 in the historic Barton Hall. This will be the 12th meeting between the Big Red and Buffalo, the first in 1950. Cornell leads the all-time series 8-4 after Cornell won the last meeting 31-6 in 2017. Donnie Vinson returns to the East Hill as the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls after time as associate head coach at Cornell University for the past three years.

Buffalo is 1-3 in duels this season and is coming off a tough weekend after hosting No. 29 Purdue and No. 28 Army in back-to-back duels. The Bulls lost to #29 Purdue, 45-0, in the opener and followed with a 37-2 loss to # 28 Army. The highlight for the Bulls included Marcus Petite of Buffalo got a takedown in the second and the third period to earn an 8-2 decision over Cole Karpinski of Army at 184.

DUAL INFORMATION FOR BIG RED INVITE

Binghamton, Brown, Buffalo, Clarion and Sacred Heart will all make a trip to Ithaca to wrestle Cornell at the Big Red Invitational. The Invitational starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning with seven mats being used throughout the day.

JOURNEYMAN RECAP

Eight wrestlers started their season undefeated while freshman Tyler Ferrara topped the 133A. Freshman Mikey Dellagatta dominated the 197B bracket with wins by fall, technical fall, and decision.

Simon Ruiz, Brett Ungar and Meyer Shapiro also competed in A brackets. Ungar and Ruiz finished second and Shapiro third.

Mikey Dellagatta won all three of his bouts with a win by fall over Eli Pack (Army West Point), a 15-0 technical fall over Austin Kohlhofer (Army West Point) and 9-6 decision over Christin Knopp (NC State).

UP NEXT

The Big Red travel to Pennsylvania for the Mat Town Open hosted by Lock Haven. Action starts at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday Dec. 1.
