Emily Pape Matches Career-High 27 Points in Cornell's 72-61 Loss to Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ — The Cornell women's basketball team lost at Rutgers 72-61 after a neck and neck game, when the Scarlet Knights went on a 19-6 run in the fourth quarter.

Junior Emily Pape led the Big Red in points, matching her career high with 27 and led the team in rebounds with eight. Sophomore Azareya Kilgoe led the team in assists with four and senior Summer Parker Hall led the team in steals with three. 

Rutgers was led by Destiny Adams who recorded a double-double with 30 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Kiyomi McMiller led the team in assists with eight.

The first half was a true back and forth battle with the first and second quarter each ending in a tie. The third quarter was also just as close with Cornell coming out on top 52-47. The game broke open for Rutgers in the fourth quarter and Cornell was unable to come back from the Scarlet Knights 13-0 run.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Cornell opened up the scoring with points in the paint from Clarke Jackson. Rutgers answered right away with a score from Destiny Adams.

  • After back and forth defensive stops, Summer Parker-Hall drew a foul and made both of her free throws to put the Big Red up 4-2 with 7:50 left in the game.

  • Cornell went on a seven-point run before Mya Petticord hit a three to make the score 9-5, still in favor of Cornell with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

  • Lisa Thompson was fouled and made the first free throw. She missed the second but the Scarlet Knights got the rebound and put one away to make the score 9-8, inching within one point of the Big Red.

  • After a media timeout, Rutgers hit the court with a four-point run, before Parker-Hall hit a layup, drew a foul and made her free throw to even the score at 12 apiece with under three and a half minutes to go in the first.

  • Jackson was then fouled for the Big Red and went 1-1 on her free throws.

  • Kiyomi McMiller regained the lead for Rutgers with a layup, but Emily Pape answered for Cornell with a lay of her own making it 15-14 in favor of Cornell with just a minute left in the quarter.

  • Adams went 1-1 on free throws for Rutgers after being fouled to end the quarter in a draw 15-15.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Pape opened up the second quarter scoring with a layup to take the lead and begin a six-point run for the Big Red.

  • Rutgers answered with a five-point run of its own, closing the score to 23-20, still in favor of Cornell. The Big Red took a timeout. 

  • After the timeout, Pape hit a three, which was immediately answered by a Rutgers three-pointer. 

  • Rachel Kaus answered with a layup to extend Cornell's lead to six.

  • Adams hit back-to-back layups to bring the game within two and then hit a jumper to tie the game at 28.

  • Azareya Kilgoe made a layup to put the Big Red up 30-28 with two and a half minutes left in the half. 

  • After a Rutgers charge was called, Pape and Parker-Hall each made a layup to extend Cornell's lead to six.

  • Chyna Cornwell was fouled and went 1-1 on her free throws. Lacey made a layup off the rebound and then hit a three pointer to tie the game at 34 going into the half.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The third quarter scoring began with Adams going 1-1 on free throws and making a layup to put Rutgers up 37-34.

  • Parker-Hall answered for the Big Red with a layup to bring the score within one. 

  • Adams responded for Rutgers with a layup of her own to put the Scarlet Knights up 39-36. 

  • Cornell went on a six-point run taking the lead 42-39.

  • Adams hit a layup to bring the score within one.

  • Kilgoe answered with a layup and one made free throw putting Cornell up 45-41 with under three minutes left in the quarter.

  • Zachara Perkins hit a layup and converted the and one to bring Rutgers within one point of the Big Red once again.

  • Pape was fouled and went 1-1 on her free throws putting Cornell up by two.

  • Petticord tied the game at 46 with a deep two.

  • Pape hit a layup and Jackson made a free throw off of a foul to put Cornell up by four with under a minute left to play.

  • Cornwell went 1-1 on her free throws closing the gap to three points for Rutgers.

  • Knee was then fouled and made two free throws for Cornell, putting them up 52-47 at the end of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Adams went on a six-point run for Rutgers giving them the lead 53-52. 

  • After back and forth play, Rutgers went on a thirteen-point run to make the score 66-55.

  • Cornell went on a 6-4 run to make the score 70-61 in favor of Rutgers with under a minute to go.

  • Adams hit a jumper to make the final score a 72-61 victory for Rutgers.

  • Cornell will remain on the road for one more game before its home opener. Next on the schedule for the Big Red is Marist on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
