2/10/2024 6:40:00 PM

NEW YORK -- The Cornell fencing team battled throughout its four bouts but could not find a team win during the first day of the 2024 Ivy League Fencing Championships on Saturday from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. Cornell opened the competition with back-to-back 15-12 decisions to No. 3 Harvard and No.1 Columbia before finishing the day with a 17-10 loss to No. 4 Princeton and a heartbreaking 14-13 defeat to No. 10 Yale.

Eighteen athletes competed for the Big Red in the four bouts, putting together a combined 41-62 record over the three weapons. Cornell's six-person epee unit led the way, going 17-23. Sophomore Ketki Ketkar led the way for Cornell with an impressive 9-3 record and the third-highest touches scored of the 26 epee athletes who competed (41). Senior Clarice Lim was the other lone fencer to record a record of .500 or better, going 3-3. Following behind was a 13-17 showing from foil, as each of the five athletes who hit the strip earned a victory. Junior Rei Weintraub led the way record-wise for the Big Red (4-3), followed closely sophomore Mia Jo (3-3). Asherah Horsley closed out the top scorers with a 4-7 record and recorded the third-most recorded touches with 41. The sabre squad rounded out the scoring with an 11-22 record, as senior captain Stella Berman (6-5), freshman Isabela Carvalho (4-6), and sophomore Erika Chin (1-4) combined for Cornell's victories on the day.

After one day of competition, Princeton leads the way with a 3-0 record, followed closely by host Columbia (3-1). Harvard, Penn, and Yale are each tied for third at 2-1, while Brown and Cornell are tied for sixth at 0-4.

Cornell will be back on the strip tomorrow for its final two bouts of the championships against Brown (11:15 a.m.) and No. 6 Penn (1 p.m.). Live scoring for the two bouts can be found here.
