ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell men's hockey senior forward
Gabriel Seger has been named the 2024 ECAC Hockey Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Friday afternoon.
The award marks the fifth time a Big Red player has been named ECAC Hockey's top scholar-athlete, joined by Colin Greening (2010), Keir Ross (2012), Andy Iles (2014), and Kyle Betts (2021).
Seger, who has a 3.513 cumulative grade-point average as an electrical and computer engineering major, has played a crucial role in Cornell's offensive success this season. The native of Uppsala, Sweden, has a team-leading 30 points on the power of 11 goals and 19 assists.
Following his assist on junior forward
Kyle Penney's empty-net goal in last Friday 3-0 shutout over Brown, Seger became the first Cornell player with consecutive 30-point seasons since Morgan Barron (2018-20) and the first to accomplish the feat in his first two seasons since Riley Nash (2007-09).
With his scoring prowess, Seger is one of 14 active Division I skaters to amass over 100 career points and one of three ECAC Hockey players to do so, joining Quinnipiac's Collin Graf (51-72—123) and Clarkson's Mathieu Gosselin (39-69—108).
Along with consistently being on the scoresheet, Seger has been a stalwart inside the faceoff circle, posting 1,200 career faceoff wins, which ranks seventh among active Division I skaters. This season, Seger has won the fifth-most faceoffs, claiming 361 victories at the dot. His .603 win rate at the dot ranks supreme among ECAC Hockey players and is third nationally among players with at least 300 faceoff wins.
Recognized for his efforts, Seger is one of two Cornell players — joined by junior goaltender
Ian Shane — nominated for this year's Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Fans are encouraged to create an account and vote daily at:
