MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Pitchers Madalyn Covelli and Maxine McCraw held St. Bonaventure's offense in check from start to finish in the Cornell softball team's 8-3 victory on Sunday in its final game at the Spring Games.
The Big Red (2-3) won its last two games after losing three in a row to start the event.
Covelli earned her second win in the circle, going four innings while allowing just one run on five hits. McCraw gave up two runs on five hits in three innings of work. The two pitchers walked only two batters (one apiece).
Sophomore Sydney Stapf gave the Big Red a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a three-run double to center that scored senior Lilly Travieso and sophomores Lauren Holt and Ella Harrod.
The Bonnies cut their deficit to two in the fourth inning on Olivia Moon's single in the fourth, and the score stayed at 3-1 until the Big Red blew the game open in the seventh.
Cornell scored five runs in that frame, with three coming on freshman Hailey Pirkey's bases-clearing double to left field. Junior Emma Antich, who had three hits in four at-bats, plated two runs with a double. Holt drove in one with a single.
Holt dominated opposing pitching over five games in Madeira Beach, as she had nine hits in 17 at-bats (.529 average) and 14 of Cornell's 32 RBI. She belted three homers, including a grand slam on Friday, and doubled twice.
Stapf logged 17 plate appearances and drove in six runs on seven hits, including two doubles.
