ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 6-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team defeated Rensselaer 1-0 in overtime on Friday night at Lynah Rink. The Big Red improved to 19-6-1, while the Engineers fell to 13-15-3.
Lily Delianedis registered the Big Red goal in the overtime period.
Karel Prefontaine and
Rory Guilday assisted the Cornell game-winning goal.
Annelies Bergmann collected 19 saves and her third shutout of the season.
The contest was a defensive-battle from start to finish. The Big Red's penalty-kill was a strong-suit, as the squad successfully stopped six Engineer power-plays. Cornell only managed to get on one power-play themselves, to no avail.
As time wounded down in the third period, Cornell skated hard and aggressive in RPI's zone, managing to accumulate eight shots in the final five minutes. RPI stood tall though, not allowing any of those shots to find the back of the net, sending the game to overtime.
Two minutes into overtime Rensselaer stole the puck and was off to the races with a one-verses-one breakaway chance, but NCAA points-leader
Izzy Daniel saved the game by chasing down the RPI skater and swiping the puck away before she could get a shot off.
Thirty seconds later, Guilday hoped onto the ice and swung the puck to Prefontaine who slid the puck across to a wide open Delianedis who would find the back of the net to give Cornell the victory.
Bergmann earned her second shutout in a row, and her third this season as she collected 19 saves and improved her record to 15-5-1.
