TYSONS, Va. — Georgetown collected a combined 44 runs on 38 hits as it swept the Cornell baseball team at a blustery Capital One Park in suburban Washington, D.C., on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoyas (8-6) posted a 24-6 victory in the opening game before returning to post a 20-0 triumph over Cornell (1-7) in the nightcap, improving to 5-0 at its brand-new home in northern Virginia.
GAME ONE RECAP
A 16-run second inning ignited a stretch of 23 unanswered runs for Georgetown as the host Hoyas defeated Cornell, 24-6, in the opening game of Sunday's twin bill from Capital One Park.
Following a scoreless first inning for both teams, Georgetown used 20 batters to leap out to an early double-digit lead over the Big Red. The Hoyas scored three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings before plating one more in the sixth to take a 23-0 lead.
Cornell trimmed the Hoyas' lead behind a six-run seventh inning, capped by a two-RBI single down the left-field line by senior catcher
Braden Mack for his third hit of the day. Junior third baseman
Max Jensen and senior designated hitter
Nathan Waugh drew bases-loaded walks before a fielding error enabled another Big Red run to score. The inning's first run came on a wild pitch by Georgetown reliever Andrew Jergins.
Joining Mack with a multi-hit day was sophomore shortstop
TJ Swidorski, who collected a pair of doubles in the seventh and eighth innings.
Georgetown tacked on a two-out RBI single in the eighth to round out the scoring for the Hoyas.
Senior designated hitter
Nathan Waugh also increased his hit streak to 11 games, dating back to last season, as he led off the ninth inning with a single.
GAME TWO RECAP
Three Georgetown pitchers kept Cornell in check as it allowed just three hits en route to its 20-0 shutout.
The Hoyas' offense picked up right where it left off, using a five-run first inning to take an early lead. Kavi Caster hit a grand slam to punctuate the five-run inning for the Hoyas, who added seven more runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, and a trio of markers in the sixth.
Waugh was the lone Big Red player with multiple hits in the latter game, extending his hit streak to 12 games, which is the longest by a Big Red player since Tommy Wagner had 12- and 13-game hit streaks during the 2017 campaign.
Junior right-handed pitcher
Chris Ellison made his season debut for the Big Red, registering a trio of strikeouts in a shutout inning of relief. Ellison had his most punchouts in a game since starting in his final appearance of the 2022 season against Brown (May 8), setting down a trio of Bears hitters across 4.1 innings.
Fellow junior
Ryan Porter, who started the game as the right fielder, appeared in his first game on the mound for the Big Red, inducing a trio of groundouts.
GAME NOTES
•
Braden Mack's multi-hit game in the opener was his first game with two-plus hits since collecting a pair of base knocks in his collegiate debut against Virginia on Feb. 25, 2022. The three hits by Mack were the most by a Big Red player this season and the most since
John Quinlan,
Nathan Waugh, and
Wils Guy all posted three-hit days against Dartmouth in Cornell's penultimate game of the 2023 season last May 6.
• Cornell's six-run seventh inning was its most runs in a single frame since plating a season-high seven runs against Harvard in the fourth inning of the opening game of an April 15 doubleheader at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge, Mass.
• Both of Swidorski's hits in the opener came off of doubles, signifying the first time a Cornell player had multiple two-base hits in a game since
Jakobi Davis last April 29 against Penn.
• Davis and Waugh both extended their on-base streaks on Sunday. Davis' streak was increased to 11 games after a pitch hit him in the third inning. A leadoff walk in the fourth inning of the first game and a single in the fourth upped Waugh's on-base streak to 12 games.
• Foster's four punchouts in the first game matched senior right-hander
Story Kimura's output from Feb. 24 against Georgia Tech for the most strikeouts by a Cornell pitcher this season.
• Along with Ellison, sophomore two-way player
Beck Urofsky also made his season debut for the Big Red, entering as a defensive replacement at first base in the eighth inning of the first game.
