STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Cornell softball team started a stretch of five games in three days at the Penn State Tournament with an extra-inning loss to the Canisius Golden Griffins and a five-inning loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions at the Nittany Lion Softball Park. The Big Red fell to 2-9, while Canisius improved to 5-8 and Penn State to 18-6.
Cornell faces Lehigh at 1:30 p.m. and Binghamton at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
GAME 1: Canisius 3, Cornell 2 (eight innings)
Cornell junior pitcher Maxine McCraw turned in her best outing of the season, allowing just six hits and three runs (two earned) while tying her career single-game best with five strikeouts. She pitched all eight innings and kept the Golden Griffins scoreless for seven.
On the other side, Megan Giese also pitched a gem. The Canisius senior gave up two runs, allowed seven hits, walked two batters and amassed 14 strikeouts. She earned her fourth victory of the season.
Gianna Fazzolari gave the Golden Griffins the lead in the top of the eighth with a double that scored Sydney Costan. Three batters later, Emily Ilano ripped another double to plate two more runs and give Canisius a 3-0 lead.
Cornell scored on sophomore Ella Harrod's sacrifice fly and junior Emma Antich's double to cut the score to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. The Big Red had the tying run on second and the winning run on first after Lauren Holt's walk with two outs, but Giese escaped with her 14th punch-out of the game.
GAME 2: Penn State 10, Cornell 1 (five innings)
Antich hit her second home run of the season to give Cornell a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the game quickly got away from the Big Red after that. The Nittany Lions scored six runs in the first inning, two in the second and four in the fourth en route to a five-inning win. Gaby Garcia had the big blow in the first, driving a three-run homer to center to put Penn State up 5-1.
Penn State pitcher Mady Volpe allowed two hits and walked one batter. She finished with six strikeouts.
