Binghamton Beats Softball For Second Straight Day

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Binghamton scored three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth as it beat the Cornell softball team for the second time this weekend on Sunday afternoon at the Penn State Tournament.

The Big Red, which has lost its last nine games, fell to 2-12 on the season. Binghamton improved to 14-7.

Cornell sophomore pitcher Madalyn Covelli was in command for most of her outing, keeping Binghamton off the board until the fifth inning. The Bearcats broke through on Mady Dodig's sacrifice fly to left, and Brianna Santos ripped a two-run single to right to make the score 3-0 after Covelli struck out Bella Farina for the second out.

In the bottom of the sixth, Binghamton tacked on insurance runs with Elisa Allen's two-run homer to left and Gabby Guerrero's double to center.

Covelli allowed all six runs and eight hits in six innings of work. She struck out four batters and walked three.

The Big Red had scoring chances in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't spark a rally. Junior Emma Antich doubled to right center with two outs in the fourth, and senior Lily Travieso and freshman Hailey Pirkey reached base in the fifth. Bearcats pitcher Olivia Kennedy, who struck out six batters over seven innings, navigated her way out of both of those innings.

Antich and freshman Maddie Ullensvang had two hits apiece for the Big Red. Sophomores Sydney Stapf and Kate Callway each had one.

Antich reached base safely in each of Cornell's five games this weekend in State College. She had six hits in 11 at-bats (.545 average), including two doubles and two homers, and drove in four runs.
