HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Dylan Patten played hero for the Cornell women's lacrosse team, scoring three of her career-high six goals in the final period as the Big Red took down Colgate, 15-13, on Tuesday evening from Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium. With her outing, Patten becomes the first Cornell player to have six or more in a contest since Caroline Allen scored seven in an 18-13 win over Marist College on Feb.19, 2020.
Patten was not the only one with a multi-point outing for a Big Red offense that won both the shots (34-22) and shots on goal battle (26-18). Junior Josie Vogel netted four points on the evening with a hat trick and an assist, while senior Caitlin Slaminko found the back of the net twice and had a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior Annie Parker also secured the first multi-point outing of her Big Red career with two goals to close out top marks on the attack for the Big Red. On the defensive end, seniors Hilary Hoover and Annie Thomas locked down the draw circle with 13 of Cornell's 18 wins, and sophomore Mackenzie Clark earned her first win of the season in the cage with four saves after entering to begin the second half.
Cornell struck first about two minutes into the contest on the shoulders of Patten, as the sophomore extended her goal streak to six straight contests by securing a pass from Gelabert before shaking her defender and firing her 12th of the season into the net. The Big Red's momentum continued off the preceding draw win from Annie Thomas, allowing Cornell to set up its offense. Vogel cashed in 52 seconds later with her 19th of the year, extending Cornell's lead to two before adding another off the stick of Annie Parker to keep the run going. Colgate answered the Big Red run with two goals from Licata and Lauren Thompson in less than a minute to trim its deficit down to one. Slaminko pushed Cornell's lead back to 4-2, causing the turnover and running nearly three-quarters of the field to bury her first of the night after absorbing the contact of Ellrose Hanlon. That lead evaporated thanks to Licata and Thompson teaming up again for consecutive goals over 0:34 to tie things at four. Cornell pushed the envelope late off the stick of Slaminko before Solis stepped up with a key save to keep things square at four after the opening fifteen.
Despite the back and forth in the first, Cornell scored the opener of the second quarter off the stick of Vogel with a successful free position attempt to give the Big Red the lead back. Vogel's goal immediately sparked the Big Red offense, charging up a 5-0 run with goals by Patten, Annie Parker, Sophie Ward, and Mia DiChiara over 3:29 to grab a 9-4 lead. Cornell also went three of five in the draw circle in that span. Colgate matched Cornell's run with a 2-0 run to cut the deficit before Vogel lit up the scoreboard for the third time in the first half to put the Big Red up by four with 6:30 to go in the half. Once again, the Raiders found a spark late in the half on both ends of the field by holding the Big Red shotless and scoring three over the final three minutes to cut Cornell's lead to one heading into halftime.
The Big Red did its best to stop the Colgate momentum from rolling into the second half, testing Solis with three consecutive shots after having a green card by Kendall Belanger carry over into the opening seconds of the third for an extended woman-up opportunity. Solis stood tall, making three saves, with the third allowing for a Raiders run out that led to a goal by Kait Henning to knot things at ten. Cornell continued to push the envelope as its scoreless streak started to trickle up over fifteen minutes but could not find the back of the net. That allowed the Raiders to take advantage with a free position goal from Devon Maillet, giving them its first lead of the game at 11-10 with 3:24 left in the third. With the timer without a Big Red goal continuing to pile up, it was time for a spark to break the drought. That pleasure fell into the hands of Patten, blitzing past Colgate's Mia Hartung and tucking it in the top left corner with a screamer to stop the drought at 19 minutes and 28 seconds and tie things up at 11 each heading into the final stanza.
Colgate drew first blood in the final period with Thompson's fifth of the evening to retake the lead before Amelia Reinholt grabbed her first goal of the season two possessions later to put the Big Red in its largest hole of the contest at two with 9:47 left. With the pressure on, Cornell kicked it into high gear on the offensive end after Reinholt's goal, using a draw control victory by Cornell draw queen Annie Thomas to spearhead three more shots fired at Solis but could not covert. The third shot by Gelabert hit the post, causing a race to the end line to see who would get possession. Cornell got their first, allowing head coach Jenny Graap to call a timeout and reset her troops. That stoppage was just what the doctor ordered for the Big Red, as Patten raced into the picture and fired her fourth home to put Cornell within one. The sophomore was not finished putting the Big Red on her back, as a draw control win by Hilary Hoover allowed Vogel and Patten to hook up for the game-tying goal with 6:48 remaining. The momentum wave was clearly in the hands of the visitors as the Big Red sideline roared in approval of Patten's fifth of the night. Despite the shift, Cornell still needed to keep its eye on the prize and the gas pedal to the floor. And that was what it would do, as a foul by Lauren Kirk inside the eight-meter put Slaminko in a free position opportunity. The senior captain had no problem with the attempt, slicing it past Solis to take a 14-13 lead. The draw control unit again worked to perfection after Slaminko's goal, as another win by Hoover allowed Cornell to set up its offense. And just a minute after Slaminko's goal, Patten capped her career outing with her sixth goal of the evening to put the Big Red ahead by two with 3:29 left. Colgate tried its best to muster up another comeback, but Hoover's fourth draw control of the evening allowed Cornell to play keep away and grab its third-straight win over the Raiders.
