Quatrani, Waugh Lead Baseball to Series Sweep Over Dartmouth

ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman catcher Mark Quatrani and senior designated hitter Nathan Waugh each registered three-RBI days to aid the Cornell baseball team to an 11-4 victory over Dartmouth, ensuring the Big Red of a three-game sweep in its home-opening series at Booth Field on Sunday afternoon.

Cornell improved to 6-11 on the year while upping its Ivy League record to 4-2, signifying the program's best six-game start in conference play since also going 4-2 in 2015.

Dartmouth's overall record fell to 6-12 and its Ancient Eight mark now stands at 2-4.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ethan Hamill cruised in his outing, allowing just three hits in seven shutout innings. He walked one batter and struck out a season-high four batters.

Eddie Albert lasted just two innings on the mound for Dartmouth, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks issued and fanning a trio of Big Red hitters.

Quatrani capped a five-run first inning for the Big Red with a three-run home run to opposite field, giving the freshman catcher his third home run of the weekend. Junior third baseman Max Jensen (RBI triple) and Waugh (RBI double) both registered run-scoring hits to the right-center field gap earlier in the frame.

After neither team scored between the second and sixth innings, Cornell plated four more runs in the home half of the seventh to increase its lead to 9-0 over the Big Green. Waugh doubled home a pair of runs with a hit to right-center field. Senior first baseman Braden Mack tacked on an RBI single and another Cornell scored on a Dartmouth throwing error with two outs.

RBI singles by Jensen and sophomore right fielder Caden Wildman in the eighth upped the Big Red's lead to 11.

Dartmouth mounted a ninth-inning rally scoring three of its four runs in the frame with one out, but junior right-hander Ryan Porter held the Big Green at just four runs, getting a game-ending strikeout while the bases were loaded.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 191st meeting between Cornell and Dartmouth as the Big Red improved its record to 89-101-1 over the Big Green. Cornell has won five of its last six (5-1) against its Ancient Eight rival, dating back to last season.

• Cornell has scored 10-plus runs in consecutive games against Dartmouth for the first time since doing so in three consecutive games (12-2 and 10-8 wins on May 10, 1980 in Hanover, and a 10-9 win on May 8, 1981 in Ithaca). It is the Big Red's first time having back-to-back 10-run contests against Division I opponents since 2022 when it edged Binghamton in 10  innings, 10-9, on April 20, and beat Dartmouth, 12-7, in the first game on an April 23 doubleheader.

• The three-game sweep was Cornell's first against an opponent since 2013, when it defeated Villanova in a three-game set in suburban Philadelphia (March 22-24, 2013). It is the first Ivy League series sweep of at least three games for the Big Red since it took all four games against Penn from April 23-24, 2005.

• Despite having his hit streak halted at 19 games on Saturday, Waugh increased his on-base streak to 21 games following his two-hit day. Jakobi Davis (20 games) and Max Jensen (13 games) also extended their respective on-base streaks on Sunday.

UP NEXT
Cornell will return to Booth Field next weekend when it hosts Harvard (4-16, 2-4 Ivy League) in a three-game Ivy League series, which begins with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday before concluding on Sunday with a 12 p.m. first pitch. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Last year, the Big Red took two of three games from the Crimson last season at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge, Mass., which included sweeping a doubleheader on Harvard's home field for the third time in program history (May 27, 1933, April 9, 1995, and April 15, 2023).
