ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell wrestling team claimed two of the three major Ivy League wrestling awards and nine spots on the All-Ivy teams, including eight on the first team, when the league announced its accolades for the 2023-24 season on Wednesday.
Mike Grey, the David Dunlop '59 Head Coach of Wrestling, has been named Ivy League Coach of the Year for the third straight season. Meyer Shapiro won Ivy League Rookie of the Year, becoming the 19th Cornell wrestler to receive the award.
Grey led the Big Red to a 12-4 overall record this season, including a 5-0 mark in the Ivy League. He has won 12 duals in each of his first three seasons as head coach and owns a 15-0 record against Ivy foes.
Shapiro went 19-2 overall, 14-0 in duals and 5-0 in Ivy duals during the regular season. He enters the postseason on a 14-match win streak, during which he has nine bonus-point wins, including five technical falls and four major decisions.
Shapiro (157 pounds) also earned unanimous first-team All-Ivy honors along with sophomore Brett Ungar (125), senior Vito Arujau (133), junior Ethan Fernandez (149), junior Julian Ramirez (165), junior Chris Foca (184), senior Jacob Cardenas (197) and senior Lewis Fernandes (285).
Sophomore Vince Cornella (141) earned second-team honors.
An All-Ivy honorable mention last year, Ungar finished the regular season 15-6 overall and 3-0 in Ivy League dual meets. Cornella, a first-team selection and the Rookie of the Year in 2022-23, went 13-7 and 9-2 in duals (2-0 Ivy).
This season marks the third in which Arujau has earned All-Ivy first-team honors. The four-time All-American and 2023 national champion finished the regular season 10-1 with an 8-0 mark in duals (5-0 Ivy).
Fernandez solidified himself at 149 pounds, arguably the biggest question mark for Cornell's lineup coming into the season. He won 19 matches and went 5-0 in Ivy duals en route to his first All-Ivy honors.
Ramirez (18-2) and Fernandes (17-9) earned first-team honors for the second time in their careers, while 2023 All-Americans Foca (17-4) and Cardenas (19-5) have done so three seasons in a row.
Fernandes also received academic All-Ivy honors for the first time in his career.
