Softball Beats Ithaca College 9-3 For Second Straight Win

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell freshman Hailey Pirkey hit her second home run in three days in the Big Red's 9-3 victory over crosstown foe Ithaca College on Tuesday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field.

The Big Red, winners of consecutive games for the first time since its two-game win streak in February, moved to 6-21 overall. The Bombers fell to 16-9.

Pirkey started the scoring for Cornell in the second inning after sophomore Sydney Stapf reached on a fielder's choice, blasting her fourth home run of the season over the left-center field fence to put the Big Red ahead 2-0. Later in the frame, sophomore Ella Harrod drove in her 11th and 12th runs of the season with a double to right center to make it 4-0.

The Bombers scored twice in the third, but the Big Red came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Samantha Albert drove in her first career run with a single up the middle, and sophomore Kate Callaway walked with the bases loaded to give Cornell a 6-2 lead.

Cornell in the fourth on Albert's bases-loaded walk and twice in the fifth on sophomore Lauren Holt's fielder's choice and junior Emma Antich's sacrifice fly to left. The Bombers got one in the top of the sixth on Cynthia Ehrenfeld's single to right field.

Freshman Maddie Ullensvang and Harrod, now the team's leader in batting average (.341), had two hits in the contest. Harrod, Pirkey and Albert each drove in two runs.

Junior pitcher Maxine McCraw started the game for the Big Red and worked two innings. She didn't allow a hit, walked one batter and recorded one strikeout. Freshman Laney Freiband entered the game in the third and lasted 1.1 innings, walking three batters and allowing two runs.
