HANOVER, NH. -- Sophomore slugger Lauren Holt put her name in the Cornell record book again, but the Big Red softball team (6-23, 3-11 Ivy League) suffered two one-run losses on Saturday in its doubleheader against the Dartmouth Big Green (11-15, 7-7 Ivy League) at the Dartmouth Softball Park.Â
Game 1: Dartmouth 5, Cornell 4
The Big Green scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Big Red 5-4.Â
Dartmouth struck first on Alaana Panu's two-run home run in the first inning, but Cornell pitcher Kyrie Denny kept the Big Green in check from that point on. She pitched 5.1 innings and left the game in line for the win.Â
The Big Red tied the game in the third inning when Ella Harrod tripled home Marisa Zorrilla and later scored on Lauren Holt's sacrifice fly to center. In the bottom of the sixth, Hailey Pirkey hit a two-run home run, her fifth home run of the season and third in her last five games, to put Cornell ahead 4-2.Â
Junior pitcher Maxine McCraw entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and got the last two outs of that inning. She recorded one out in the seventh before Dartmouth's rally began.Â
After Mary Beth Callahan popped out to center, Panu reached on an infield single, and Kelly Beaupre hit a game-tying two-run homer to left center field. Olivia Schramm reached on a fielding error and scored from first base on Leila Hennessy's game-winning double to left center.Â
Game 2: Dartmouth 8, Cornell 7
Cornell came back to tie the game after trailing 7-1 in the fourth inning but once again couldn't finish as Dartmouth came away with another walk-off victory.Â
The Big Green scored six runs in the second inning, with four coming on Beaupre's grand slam to left field. Schramm made it 7-1 in the fourth, ripping a double to right to score Calahan from third.Â
Cornell started chipping away in the fifth inning when Holt cut Dartmouth's lead to three with a three-run blast to center field. Holt, who tied her home run total from last season (9), leads the Ivy League in homers and RBI (40). She's the ninth player in Cornell history to drive in 40 or more runs in a season and the first since Elise Menaker had 52 RBI in 2010.
Cornell scored three runs in the top of the seventh, getting two on-bases-loaded walks from Holt and Emma Antich. Maddie Ullensvang tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Ella Harrod, who reached base four times in the doubleheader.Â
But the Big Green quickly ended the game in the seventh. Alli Ohde, the first batter in the inning, hit a walk-off homer to lift Dartmouth to an 8-7 win.Â
