Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 10 Yale Takes Down Cornell on Senior Day

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 10 Yale Bulldogs women's lacrosse team ripped off five goals to begin the game and never looked to hand Cornell a 21-8 loss on Saturday afternoon from Schoellkopf Field. Yale, who clinched at least a share of the Ivy regular season crown, improved to 12-1 and 6-0 in Ivy action, while Cornell fell to 7-7 and 2-4 in conference play.

Senior Bridget Babcock led the charge in her final home game in a Big Red uniform with two goals alongside a caused turnover and ground ball. Sophomore Ella Wilmot also had two goals on the afternoon, and Dillyn Patten closed out the top of the sheet with a goal and an assist for her first multi-point game since finding the back of the net six times earlier this season against Colgate. Other notables included a goal and team-high five draw controls from Caitlin Slaminko and two ground balls from Grace Faircloth.

Taylor Everson put together a career day with five goals and an assist on six shot attempts to pace Yale to its second 20-plus goal output of the season. Fallon Vaughn (three goals, three assists), Sky Carrasquillo (four goals, one assist), and Chloe Conahgan (two goals, three assists) clocked multi-goal outings.

The Bulldogs struck first off the opening draw, with Sky Carrasquillo netting her 26th of the year 21 ticks into the contest. Yale tacked on two more less than a minute apart from Taylor Everson to jump up 3-0. Cornell finally got its first offensive possession three minutes into the game and had a shot from Donahoe sail wide but kept possession as Sophie Ward won the race to the backline. The ball went back to the Bulldogs seconds later on a Big Red turnover and cashed in on a woman-up opportunity off Carrasquillo's stick to extend its lead to four. Yale's lead ballooned to 5-0 on another woman-up before Cornell finally got a chance on cage after a Bulldogs foul set up a free position attempt. Dillyn Patten ensured the shot went in with her 18th of the year to get Cornell on the board. Patten's goal did nothing to slow down the visitors, with two goals from Chloe Conaghan to extend its lead. Cornell had one final chance as an Emmy Pascal turnover allowed the Big Red to rip three shots toward O'Connor. The third one of the trip was successful, as Lucy Dwyer found Ward in traffic before the buzzer sounded to make it 8-2 after one.

Cornell would make a goalie change to open the second with Mackenzie Clark sliding in net. The sophomore stood tall on the Bulldogs first shot attempt with a save. A turnover a possession later came back to bite the Big Red, as Yale found the net to extend its lead to 9-2. Yale won the preceding draw control but did not keep possession for long, as a caused turnover by Babcock flipped it back to the Big Red. A preceding shooting space foul was charged to the Bulldogs, allowing Babcock to fire home her 15th of the year for Cornell's third tally. The momentum was short-lived, with another Yale 3-0 run following Babcock's goal to make the score 12-3. Two minutes of game action flew by with no goals before Slaminko scored her 18th of the year with 3:07 to go in the half. Ella Wilmot added her name to the sheet with 0:39 left off a feed from Kylie Gelabert to get within eight. But Yale had other plans, capping an 11-5 shot advantage over the quarter with a sweeper by Taylor Lane before the buzzer sounded to go into half up nine.

Yale opened the scoring 47 seconds into the second half to put forward a running clock. Cornell tried to gain traction after the goal, using a Hilary Hoover draw control win to fly into the Yale defensive zone and fire two shots from Vogel and Babcock that did not find the net. The Bulldogs offense kept rolling with three more goals over five minutes from Everson, Vaughn, and Carrasquillo to keep the pedal down. With just two shots in the third period, Cornell's offense could not find any rhythm. But Cornell got its opportunity with 2:58 left as Vogel fell driving towards the net, forcing a free position attempt. Vogel, who had a team-best 11 free position goals coming into the afternoon, slid her 30th of the year past CamiDonadio to earn her 100th career point in a Big Red uniform and Cornell's sixth of the afternoon. Yale did tack on one more from Megan Kitagawa with 0:55 left to have a 13-goal cushion heading into the final 15 minutes.

Both teams struggled to gain traction early in the fourth, with three turnovers and four shots combined. Donadio and Horner stepped up on those shot attempts, stopping two each to keep the quarter scoreless. Yale finally broke the scoring drought on a goal by Everson with 6:51 left. Yale tested Horner immediately after the goal with another shot deflected and scooped up by senior defender Olivia Wall. Looking to move quickly, Patten raced up the field and played hot potato for Wilmot. Even with a defender on each side, the freshman got just enough power on her shot to throw it in for her second of the game. Senior Grace Faircloth, who played her 45th consecutive game on defense for the Big Red, grabbed the preceding draw control and secured one final offensive possession. After consecutive fouls by the Bulldogs, Babcock stepped to the edge of the eight-meter arc and looked to cap her final home game in a Big Red uniform with a bang. The senior made it count, earning her second goal of the day with 2:53 left. But the damage was done, as Yale tacked on one more to head out of Ithaca with a victory and the outright winner of the Ivy League Regular Season Championship.
