Softball Drops Two At Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Cornell softball team dropped both games in its doubleheader against Yale on Saturday afternoon at 5k Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium. The Big Red fell to 4-18 (2-7 Ivy), while the Bulldogs improved to 14-20 (9-3 Ivy).

Game 1: Yale 9, Cornell 8 (8 innings)

Yale, which overcame a 6-0 deficit, beat the Big Red 9-8 in eight innings to start the doubleheader.

The Big Red scored two runs in the first inning, with the first coming on Emma Antich's double to left center and the second on an error by Yale shortstop Carolyn Skotz. In the second inning, Ella Harrod drove in one with a single, and Lauren Holt belted a three-run home run to center, putting Cornell ahead 6-0.

Holt, a 2023 All-Ivy performer, leads the Ivy League in home runs (8) and runs batted in (33). She has homered in three straight games and needs just one more to tie her 2023 total (9).

The Bulldogs scored one in the second before they began to climb back into the game with a three-run third to Cornell's lead to 6-4. Cornell's Hailey Pirkey made it 7-4 with an RBI single in Yale scored five unanswered runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to complete the comeback win.

After Carmen Muscolina's solo shot to left field to start the sixth inning, Willa Ferrer ripped a two-run homer later in that inning to make it an 8-7 game. Libby Peoples tied the game at eight with a sole homer to start the bottom of the seventh.

The Bulldogs walked off the Big Red in the eighth when Ferrer scored on a fielder's choice.

Game 2: Yale 7, Cornell 3

Yale scored six runs over the first four innings en route to a 7-3 victory to close the series.

Sophie Woodridge hit solo home runs in the first and fourth innings. Isabella Fortini and Carolyn Skotz each drove in two runs after Woodridge's second homer to put Yale ahead 6-0.

Kate Callaway and Ella Harrod drove in runs with singles for Cornell in the fifth inning. Holt drove in one on a fielder's choice in the sixth.
