Harrod, Pirkey Drive In Two Runs Apiece In Softball's 6-4 Win Over Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Behind a strong performance from pitcher Kyrie Denny in the circle and timely hitting, the Cornell softball team (8-27, 5-14 Ivy) beat Princeton (24-15, 12-7 Ivy) 6-4 on Friday evening at Strubing Field. It was the Big Red's second road win of the season and first since its 7-4 victory over Penn on March 24.

Denny, who earned her third win of the season, pitched all seven innings and gave up eight hits while striking out one batter. Only two of the four runs she allowed were earned.

The Tigers scored in the first inning, but the Big Red responded with six unanswered runs. The Big Red tied the game on a fielding error in the second inning and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on sophomore Ella Harrod's two-run double to left center field. Two batters later, freshman Maddie Ullensvang sent another double to left center, scoring Harrod to put the Big Red ahead 4-1.

Big Red freshman Hailey Pirkey plated key insurance runs in the top half of the seventh, ripping a two-run single up the middle that scored Lauren Holt and Harrod to give the Big Red a 6-1 lead.

Princeton drew closer in the bottom of the seventh, cutting Cornell's lead to 6-4. Abby Hornberger scored on Sonia Zhang's infield single, and Zhang came around to score one batter later on Lauren Salbone's triple to center field. Salbone also came around to score on that play on a Cornell fielding error.

A batter later, Julia Dumais doubled to bring the tying run, Allison Ha, to the plate. Denny got Ha to ground out to shortstop to end the threat and snap the Big Red's three-game losing skid.
