Brown Sweeps Baseball in Saturday Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning by Brown's Mark Henshon solidified the Bears' 13-12 come-from-behind victory, solidifying a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader from Attanasio Family Field at Murphy Stadium.

After posting an 11-2 victory in the opening game, Brown conceded seven unanswered runs over the eighth and ninth innings to fall behind in the ninth inning, 12-8, before plating four runs in the home half of the ninth to force extra innings, ultimately leading to Henshon's game-winning base knock.

Henshon (2-for-4, three runs, three walks, three RBI) was one of three players for Brown (11-27, 6-14 Ivy League) to register multi-hit games in the nightcap. Mika Petersen drove in a game-high five RBI in his 3-for-6 day at the plate. Quinn Rooks tallied a pair of hits, including a double.

Cornell (14-19, 10-10 Ivy League) registered 20 hits on the day, the program's most since April 5, 2017, when it recorded 28 hits in a 27-14 win over Towson. Junior left fielder Kyler Musser, junior infielder Max Jensen, and sophomore shortstop TJ Swidorski all had three-hit days for the Big Red, which saw all nine starters record at least one base hit and eight of the nine starters log two-plus base knocks.

Freshman designated hitter Mark Quatrani and senior second baseman Matt Barnhorst each drove in three RBI. In the latter game, Barnhorst mustered two of Cornell's three extra-base hits, coming on a double and home run.

A pair of two-RBI hits by Barnhorst and junior center fielder Jakobi Davis gave Cornell a 4-0 lead in the second inning, only to be countered by a four-run inning by Brown.

Junior outfielder John Quinlan gave Cornell the lead back with an RBI single in the fourth inning, which turned into four unanswered runs plated by Brown in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-5 lead.

Following three scoreless innings, the Big Red sparked its four-run eighth inning to take a 9-8 advantage thanks to a leadoff home run by Barnhorst, a two-run single by Jensen, and a go-ahead RBI single by Quatrani. Cornell's lead would increase behind three more runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Musser and a two-run single by Quatrani.

Brown's comeback attempt began in the ninth inning with a two-run single by Henshon. A bases-loaded fielder's choice by Petersen enabled another Bears run to score, setting up a sacrifice fly by Gunner Boree to tie the game.

Rooks' leadoff double led Cornell to issue an intentional walk to Crawford, setting up a double play opportunity for the Big Red. After an infield popout, Henshon punctuated the doubleheader sweep with his walk-off RBI single to the left-center field gap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Brown used four multi-run innings to leap out to a 9-0 seventh-inning lead over Cornell en route to its 11-2 victory in the opening game.

Senior first baseman Braden Mack (RBI single) and Barnhorst (sacrifice fly) plated the lone runs for Cornell, which snapped the Bears' string of nine unanswered runs.

Boree had a game to remember, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while finishing a double shy of the cycle. Reece Rappoli chipped in two hits in a 2-for-3 effort, with a home run and three RBI. Charles Crawford also had a three-hit day, going 3-for-3 and driving in a pair of Bears runs.

Jensen was Cornell's lone player with a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double. Junior center fielder Jakobi Davis notched his second triple of the season.

ON DECK
Cornell will conclude its 2024 regular-season schedule when it returns to Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium for the series finale with Brown. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ethan Hamill (2-3, 6.08 ERA) is scheduled to go up against Brown junior right-hander Santhosh Gottam (2-7, 7.86 ERA). First pitch between the Big Red and Bears is scheduled for 12 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.

A victory on Sunday would clinch Cornell a spot in the upcoming 2024 Ivy League Baseball Tournament, hosted by Columbia University in New York City from May 17-20. Without a win, Cornell will have to wait for the results of next weekend's series between Yale and Harvard to learn its fate for the postseason tournament.
