ITHACA, N.Y. — The fight to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Swimming team will be on the mind of two Cornellians as Julian Correa '27 and Ilya Evdokimov '18 will represent the Big Red in this week's U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, home of the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts, marking the first time in Olympic Trials history that the event will be occur inside a football stadium.
U.S. Olympic Team Trials will begin on Saturday, June 15 and run until Sunday, June 23.
Correa will make his first appearance at U.S. Olympic Trials, representing the Big Red in the 400-meter individual medley. The first race for the 400 IM is scheduled for Sunday, June 16.
The rising sophomore is coming off a strong first season on East Hill, taking home Second Team All-Ivy honors after grabbing a runner-up spot at the 2024 Ivy League Championships with a time of 3:48.60. His time fell nine-hundredths of a second short of his season-best time in the event set at the 2023 Zippy Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The native of Los Angeles also helped the Big Red to a program record time of 6:26.55 in the 800-meter freestyle Relay at the Ivy League Championships and swam the third-fastest times in program history in the 500- (4:21.25) and 1650-meter freestyle (15:27.01) events.
Evdokimov will make his third appearance at U.S. Olympic Trials, swimming in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events. The five-time NCAA All-American will look to eclipse his best marks set at the 2021 trials in Omaha, Neb., including a time of 1:00.22 in the 100 and 2:11.39 in the 200. His 100 breaststroke time put him as a reserve, falling two spots short of making the final, while his 200 breaststroke mark put him in 11th place. He also competed at the 2016 trials, also held in the Cornhusker State, placing 10th in the 100 and 11th in the 200.
The Coral Springs, Fla., product had a decorated career for the Big Red that included becoming the fourth swimmer to win four titles in more than one event by sweeping the 100 and 200 breaststroke in all four seasons competing for the Big Red. His 51.32 time in the event at the 2018 NCAA Championships still stands as the fastest time in program and Ivy League history. The 2018 graduate also still holds top program marks in the 200 breaststroke (1:52.28) and 200 medley relay (1:26.00).
Evdokimov will kick off his fight to find a spot in Paris with heat and semifinal action for the 100 breaststroke on Saturday, June 15, with the finals scheduled for Sunday, June 16. Heat and semifinal action for the 200 will occur on Tuesday, June 18, with the finals set for the following day.
