PARIS, France -- In an event where all twelve athletes combined for 24 scratched throws, Rudy Winkler '17 improved on his best-ever Olympic finish of seventh place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a sixth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday afternoon. The three-time Cornell track and field All-American threw a best 77.92 meters, topping his qualifying round score of 77.29 meters.
Winkler's first throw was good for 77.92 meters, finishing fourth after round one. Despite scratching on his second and third throws, he advanced through the cuts, where the top eight throwers advance and are re-seeded for a chance at a medal, in sixth place, His fourth throw went left of the field on a late release, also ending in a scratch. Throw five war righted, clocking in at 71.90 meters, but a final scratch on the sixth toss solidified a sixth-place finish.
