Big Red Plays UAlbany To A 2-2 Draw Behind Diakos, Harris Goals

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team played the University at Albany Great Danes to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. The Big Red moved to 2-0-2 on the season, while the Great Danes became 2-4-1.

Giogos Diakos and Alex Harris registered the Big Red goals in the contest. Aidan Martin and Daniel Samways were credited with helpers. Ryan Friedberg earned three saves in the contest.

The majority of the first half was played scoreless between the squads, until Diakos took initiative to open up the scoring for the Big Red in the 40th-minute. "It was great to see Gio get on the score sheet with a fantastic finish", John Smith the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned

Less than 30 seconds later, UAlbany forward Ander Costello answered by getting the ball past Cornell net-minder Friedburg to tie the game up at 1-1. Costello found the back of the net for the second time at the 48-minute mark to put the Great Danes ahead 2-1.

Following a missed penalty-kick, Harris found the back of the net at the 69-minute mark , which served as his fifth goal of the season. "It was impressive to see how Alex rebounded from the missed penalty miss by scoring the equalizer", coach Smith added.

In the waning moments of the game, both squads made a push for the game-winning tally, to no avail. Cornell was able to produce the best chance, when Aidan Martin shifted through the Great Danes back-line and attempted a shot that would ricochet off of the top bar of the goal. Coach John Smith spoke honestly about the potential game-winner that the Big Red nearly squeaked in. "We thought we had stolen the three points when Aidan cracked a shot off the bar, [but] I don't think we really did enough to win the game tonight".
