ITHACA, N.Y. — Former Cornell forwards Matt Stienburg '23 and Gabriel Seger '24 and defensemen Travis Mitchell '23 were three Cornell men's hockey alumni donning NHL sweaters at rookie camps this past weekend.
Stienburg, who is entering the final year of his two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche, played with the Avalanche's rookies in the 2024 Rookie Faceoff tournament in El Segundo, Calif., hosted by the Los Angeles Kings. The Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, and Seattle Kraken were the other NHL clubs at the tournament.
Colorado opened the Rookie Faceoff with a 4-3 loss to Anaheim on Friday before falling to Seattle, 5-1, on Saturday. The Avalanche are concluding the tournament this afternoon when it faces San Jose at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. PT).
Seger, who signed a one-year AHL contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins on June 11 with the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, played with Detroit in a two-game series with Dallas at the 2024 NHL Prospect Games in Traverse City, Mich., at the Centre ICE Arena.
In the opening game against the Stars, Seger scored the game-winning goal in the Red Wings' 5-1 victory. Detroit also won the latter game of the series, 3-2, on Sunday.
For a second consecutive season, Mitchell was with the New York Islanders at its rookie camp. The Islanders did not participate in a prospect-based tournament, instead opting for a four-day rookie camp.
