ITHACA, N.Y. -- Columbia scored early and the Lions' defense held up against incredible pressure late as the visitors topped Cornell 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. Columbia improved to 2-3 (1-0 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 0-5 (0-1 Ivy) in the conference opener for both teams and the first home contest for the 2024 Cornell team.
Lindsey Yu's goal at the 5:24 of the first quarter came after she poked it away from a Big Red defender in front of and into the goal, and that was all the offense that the Lions would muster and need. Katie Wimmer was strong in goal, making nine saves to record the shutout as Columbia picked up its first league win since 2022.
The Big Red had 10 penalty corners, including four in the final three minutes, and out-shot the Lions 19-9 on the afternoon but never could get it past Wimmer or the Columbia defense. The Big Red's relentless pressure meant the home team held a 14-2 edge in shots after the break.
Martha Broderick recorded three saves in the hard-luck loss for the Big Red.
Georgia Kelly and
Claire Wolfe each put two shots on goal for Cornell.
