ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell field hockey team conceded early but answered quickly, picking up its first victory of 2024 with a 4-1 triumph over Bryant on Sunday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red improved to 1-5, while the Bulldogs slipped to 3-4.
Polly Parsons and
Vivienne Mueller each had a goal and an assist as Cornell had four different goal scorers.
Julia Ramsey and
Annabel Cheveley also tallied for the home team.
Martha Broderick made four saves in cage to earn the win. The Big Red held a decisive 24-10 edge in shots to go along with a 7-5 edge advantage on penalty corners.
After suffering four consecutive one-goal losses, Cornell might have been on its heels after the Bulldogs tallied 6:14 in wine Alexa Sedicino followed her own shot and poked it into goal to make it 1-0. By the end of the quarter, the Big Red would be in control.
Cornell tied the game up 2:02 later when Parsons got a shot off that was blocked and tipped around before
Julia Ramsey cleaned it up and evened the score. Less than four minutes later, Cornell held the lead when Parsons rocketed a shot past the Bryant defense from distance.
The Big Red found another goal midway through the second quarter when Cheveley potted her first collegiate goal when the Bulldogs turned it over in the defensive end with Mueller intercepting the pass and getting it to the freshman who shoveled the goal in to make it 3-1. Mueller sealed the win in the fourth when she dribbled inside the arc down the right side and chipped in a shot from a tough angle.
Maud Van Lierop (three saves, one goal) and Sara Desousa (two saves, three goals) split time for Bryant in goal.
