Field Hockey Evens Ivy Record With 3-1 Triumph at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. -- The Cornell field hockey team picked up its second consecutive victory, evening its Ivy League mark at 1-1 after a 3-1 triumph at Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Chase Field. Cornell improved to 2-5, while the Big Green slipped to 1-5 (0-2 Ivy).

Grace Leahy and Olivia Friedberg each tallied their first goals of the season in the win, with Friedberg tallying the game-winner with her score in the second quarter. Julia Ramsey put in her team-leading third goal of the year to add some insurance in the second half. Both Polly Parsons and Georgia Kelly were credited with assists in the victory. Martha Broderick picked up her 14th career win in net after making three saves.

Dartmouth held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners, but the Big Red had the more dangerous chances all afternoon. Ella Bowman scored on a penalty corner with assists from Gabriela Braceras and Florentina Terra on a perfectly-placed shot to the lower left that was just out of Broderick's dive.

Grace Leahy got the Big Red energized early, as the Ivy League's leading returning goal scorer got the visitors on the board. Her tackle inside the circle as the Big Green was attempting to clear allowed her to carry the ball in and dump it past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 just 5:46 in. Leahy's goal was the 17th of her career, moving her into 14th place on the school's list.

Though Dartmouth temporarily tied it up on a penalty corner midway through the second, the Big Red regained its lead just over four minutes later. An entry pass to Olivia Friedberg was shoveled over to Parsons, who returned the ball to a cutting Friedberg. The senior's shot off the give-and-go was slipped under the advancing goalkeeper's legs at 25:46 to put Cornell ahead, 2-1.

Each team attempted five shots in the first 30 minutes, though the Big Green had a 6-1 edge in penalty corners at halftime. Broderick made two saves in goal for the Big Red.

The third period was highlighted by an early save by Broderick and two late earned corners in the final two minutes. The second saw Ramsey get a deflection on Georgia Kelly's shot that was blocked, but the sophomore was able to get her stick and direct it into the goal for her third score of the season.

The Big Red held off Dartmouth effectively in the fourth, allowing one shot and one corner, and was never threatened en route to its first Ivy win of the campaign.
