BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: The Colgate Game

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Take a look back at the first game of the Dan Swanstrom era on September 21, 2024, at Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium where Cornell fell, 41-24, with these notes below.

PLAYER NOTES

  • Senior quarterback Jameson Wang had 313 passing yards and another 41 on the ground to give him 354 yards of total offense, his fourth career game of 350 or more yards.
  • Wang posted his fourth 300-yard passing game and the 52nd in school history.
  • Wang upped his career passing touchdown total to 30, making him the fifth player at Cornell to do so.
  • With his 41 rushing yards, Wang moved from 22nd to 20th in career rushing and ended the day with 1,357 yards on the ground, surpassing Randy Barbour (1,343) and Bob McAniff (1,347) along the way.
  • Sophomore receiver Brendan Lee had a pair of catches of 40+ yards, becoming the first Big Red player to have two or more receptions that long since Curtis Raymond III caught two passes for 89 yards (47 and 42) at Bucknell on Oct. 2, 2021.
  • Sophomore receiver Sam Musungu's seven catches for 77 yards were both career highs.
  • Musungu and junior receiver Parker Woodring both had their second career touchdown reception.
  • Nathaniel Hillenburg had a career-long 61-yard punt among his four kicks.
  • Alan Zhao was perfect on place-kicks, making his first career field goal (32 yards) and connecting on all three PAT attempts.
  • Junior running back Johntu Reed scored his first career touchdown with his 1-yard reception in the fourth quarter.
  • Sophomore safety Johnny Williamson registered two tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup 

TEAM NOTES

  • The Big Red's record in season openers is now 94-37-4.
  • The loss snapped a two-game win streak in season-opening wins on the road.
  • Nine different receivers hauled in at least once catch in the game with three hauling in passes for 30 yards or more.
  • The Big Red's .784 completion percentage in the game (29-of-37) is the fifth-best in a contest in school history.
  • Cornell scored on all four opportunities in the red zone with three touchdowns and a field goal.
  • The Big Red offensive line did not allow a sack, the first time it did so in a game with at least 35 dropbacks since it passed 42 times against Princeton on Oct. 28, 2023.
  • Colgate evened the all-time series at 51-51-3 dating back to the first meeting in 1896.
