The Big Red Secure 12 Wins at the Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, CT — Cornell men's tennis captured 12 wins over three days of competition at the Yale Invitational. The Big Red played matches against Yale, Penn State, Buffalo and NJIT while at the tournament. 

Cornell opened the invitational on Friday going 2-0 in the doubles matches. Petar Teordorovic and Jack McCarthy defeated Penn State's Morgan and Bossem (6-3). Nathan Mao and Aman Sharma carried the torch and defeated Buffalo's Tang and Snaiders (7-5).

The Big Red then switched over to the day one singles matches. McCarthy started off the bunch defeating NJIT's Perez Ramos in two sets (7-5, 6-2). Mao and Sharma then lost both of their first matches, each in two sets. Teodorovic ended day one on a high for Cornell as he defeated Yale's Krish Gupta in two sets (6-2, 6-1).

On day two, the Big Red started off slow going 1-3 in the doubles matches. Mao and Sharma dropped both of their doubles matches on day two, the first to Buffalo's Nasyam and Mitsakos (6-2) and the second to Sterin and Forgaci of Penn State by a tiebreaker (7-6 (5). Teordorovic and McCarthy dropped their first match against NJIT's Perez Ramos and Skorjanc (6-3) but later on in the day defeated Yale's Liao and Gupta (7-5).

In the day two singles matches, Cornell picked up the pace and went 3-1. McCarthy defeated Byers of Penn State in three sets. McCarthy dropped set one (2-6) and then battled back in a set two tiebreaker (7-6(4)) to force a set three where he defeated Byers (7-5) and took the match. Teordorovic defeated Liao of Yale in two sets each going 6-3 and Sharma came back to defeat Morgan in three sets after dropping set one (3-6, 6-1, 6-4). The one singles loss of the day came from Mao who was defeated by Perez Ramos in two sets including a tiebreaker in set one (7-6 (8), 6-2).

On day three, the Big Red started off the day going 1-1 in doubles. Sharma and Mao defeated Morgan and Bossem in a tiebreaker (7-6 (3)). Teordorovic and McCarthy lost to Penn State's Byers and Lindsay (6-4).

To end the tournament, Cornell went 3-1 in the final singles matches. Teodorovic started off the group with the only singles loss of the day as he fell to Perez Ramos in two sets (6-2, 6-3). Mao then defeated Yale's Lefevre in two sets (7-5, 6-1), McCarthy defeated Liao in a three set comeback (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and Sharma finished off the invitational by defeating Byers in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4).

The Big Red came out of the Yale Invitational with 12 wins.
