Broderick's Career Day Not Enough As Field Hockey Falls At UConn

STORRS, Conn. -- Sophomore Martha Broderick made a career-high 13 saves, but UConn's explosive offensive attack proved too much for the Cornell field hockey team in its season opener as the Huskies claimed a 6-1 triumph on Friday afternoon at Stevens Field. UConn improved to 3-0 on the year with the victory.

Broderick bettered the 10 saves she made a season ago in her collegiate debut at Syracuse, but the UConn offense, which entered the game averaging 5.5 goals per game, bettered that mark in the victory. The Huskies held a 20-5 edge in shots, including 19-2 on goal, and doubled up the visitors in corners, 10-5. Sarah Rogalski had the lone Big Red goal with her first period rocket that cut a 2-0 UConn lead in half.

Rogalski posted her third career goal, all coming in her last 10 contests, after UConn ran out to a 2-0 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. It was as close as the visitors would get on this day, as UConn avenged last season's 2-1 Big Red triumph in Ithaca behind two goals by Juul Sauer and a pair of assists from Sol Simone. The Huskies had five different goal scorers and nine players who were credited with points. Natalie McKenna picked up the win in goal despite having to make just one save for the home team.
