Game Recap: Volleyball |

Cornell Volleyball falls 3-1 to UC San Diego

Annapolis, Md. – The Cornell volleyball team fell to UC San Diego 3-1 to wrap up the Kristen Dickmann Invitational.

Two players recorded double digit kills. Junior Eliza Konvicka lead the team with 14 kills and  11 digs. Followed closely by sophomore Jaida Sione with 12 kills on .379 hitting percentage.

Camryn Carlo and Mackenzie Parsons led the team with six blocks each in defensive efforts.

Jackie Baker secured four aces during the campaign.

First Set (18-25 UC San Diego)

The Tritons kept the first set tight featuring eight ties and five lead changes

A kill from Sione opened the game for the Big Red.

With the game knotted up at 14-14, back to back kills from Konvicka followed by one from Haley Clark force UC San Diego into their first timeout at 17-14 Cornell.

The Tritons respond with a 5-0 run pull ahead  17-19.

UC San Diego take the first set with a 6-0 run.

Four kills from Konvicka and three from Sione set the pace for the rest of the match for the Big Red.

Second Set (22-25 UC San Diego)

UC San Diego open with a 6-3 run that was snapped by a kill from Sione, her fourth on the day.

After a media timeout Cornell responded with a 6-3 run, featuring kills from Meghan Gaffigan and Kohanihokuao Misipeka to shorten the Tritons lead to 14-18.

Cornell was not done, a late 5-1 run sparked by a Brooke Cooper kill brought the Big Red back making the score 19-21.

The Tritons go on to secure the frame 25-22.

Third Set (25-17 Cornell)

Cornell used the momentum found at the end of the last set to go up 11-4 at the beginning of set three. The run featured four service aces, three from Jackie Baker.

The middle of the match was back and fourth highlighted by two kills each from Konvicka, Clark and Carlo.

A kill by Carlo brought on match point at 24-17.

Clark ends with a service ace for Cornell (25-17) to force a fourth set.

Fourth Set (22-25 UC San Diego)

Cornell keeps it going starting the fourth set up 7-2.

The Tritons answer with a 9-3 run to go up 11-10.

Cornell stay in the game with a 7-2 run to narrow UC San Diegos lead to only one point (19-20).

A pair of UC San Diego attack errors made the scoreboard read 21-20 before the Tritons captured the match on a 4-3 run (22-25).

Match Notes

  • Libero Sarita Pomar grabbed 10 digs with a pair of assists.
  • Jackie Baker marked four aces and four digs on the day.
  • Doga Ozalp reaches her third straight match with assist over 25 with 31 against UC San Diego.
  • Camryn Carlo set a new career high single game aces with two in the match.
  • Meghan Gaffigan made her 2024 debut with a kill.

The Big Red hits the road for a three-game series in Valparaiso, Ind. They will face Purdue Fort Wayne, Valparaiso and Miami OH Sept. 13-14.
