#7 Big Red Ties #10 St. Lawrence Behind Clutch Performances By Bergmann, Penalty-Kill

CANTON, N.Y. - The no. 7-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team tied the no. 10 St. Lawrence Saints 2-2 on Saturday evening at Applton Arena. The Big Red moved to 10-3-3, while the Saints became 12-5-5.

Mckenna Van Gelder and Georgia Schiff registered the Big Red goals in the game. Avi Adam, Grace Dwyer, and Piper Grober were credited with assists in the contest. Annelies Bergmann earned 36 saves in the game.

The pace of the game started off fierce as both teams were adamant in the defensive-zone. Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period.

The second period saw a flurry of goals, with three being scored in a span of three minutes. St. Lawrence scored the opening goal of the game on the power-play. Cornell responded two minutes later when Van Gelder's relentlessness paid off to tie the score at 1-1. The Saints would then regain the lead one minute after that on an unorthodox bounce from the puck.

Schiff found a clutch equalizer at the beginning of the third period. With three minutes to go, Cornell was assessed with a penalty, giving the Saints a prime opportunity at a go-ahead goal. Bergmann and the Big Red stood tall killing-off the penalty.

As the game came to a close a controversial icing call landed the Saints a prime offensive-zone face-off with just 11 seconds remaining. An unhappy Cornell bench would lead to the Big Red being assessed a bench minor in the final seconds.

Cornell would hold the Saints scoreless for the final 11 seconds, but the power-play would leak into the overtime period. Cornell held clear again on the penalty-kill due to a handful of timely stops by Bergmann. Neither team would succeed in finding the go-ahead goal as the teams skated away from the contest with 1.5 points in the ECAC Hockey standings.

Grober netted the puck for the Big Red in the shootout, which proved to be enough to win.
