Men's Soccer Downs Penn In Critical Ivy Match at Rhodes Field

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Cornell men's soccer team defeated the University of Pennsylvania Quakers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Field. The Big Red improved to 9-2-1, while Penn dropped to 6-3-4 on the season.

Connor Miller and Kasper Wollstein notched Cornell goals in the contest. Big Red goaltender Ryan Friedberg managed two key saves throughout the game, and 9-2-1 between the pipes this season with the win.

Penn net-minder Phillip Falcon III registered six saves in the contest. Marco Bottene scored the lone Quaker goal of the game, which was assisted by Oliver Pratt.

"I thought it was a really mature performance from the guys tonight. We probed and threatened throughout the game, and did a good job capitalizing on two of the good looks we created. We also did a great job defending as a team.", John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.

After a scoreless first half, Miller scored in the 62nd minute to give Cornell a 1-0 advantage. The Big Red executed the dagger in the 84th minute when Wollstein made a a shifty maneuver in the box coupled with an impressive finish in the bottom left corner of the net.

Bottene scored in the 90th minute to make things interesting with 55 seconds remaining. Cornell would hold off and prevent Penn from finding the equalizer to escape with three critical points in the Ivy League standings.

The Cornell men's soccer team will host the Syracuse Orange on Tuesday night. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Berman Field. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
