Beyond the Box Score: The Brown Game

ITHACA, N.Y. - Go "Beyond the Box Score" of Cornell football's 30-24 come-from-behind win over Brown on Saturday, Oct. 25. 
 

TEAM NOTES
• With the win, Cornell's all-time record is 661-565-34, including 453-239-21 at home and 308-205-15 at Schoellkopf Field.
• The Big Red holds a 318-259-14 record in the month of October.
• Cornell upped its record to 52-433-1 all-time when trailing at the end of the third quarter.
• The Big Red 243-12 all-time when scoring at least 30 points.
• Cornell cut into Brown's lead in the all-time series, getting within 32-39-1 dating back to the program's first meeting in 1895.
• Cornell is now 6-6 all-time in overtimes, including 5-1 when it plays multiple overtimes and 5-2 at home.
• Trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter (17-6), the Big Red posted its biggest comeback since falling behind Princeton 28-16 in the fourth en route to a 29-28 victory on Oct. 28, 2017 on the road.
• The win was the Big Red's first in an overtime game since defeating Brown 38-31 on Oct. 20, 2007 at Schoellkopf Field.
• Cornell has never played more than two overtimes in a game.
• Cornell and Brown have played four overtime games, the most the Big Red has played against any opponent. The Big Red is 3-1 in those games.
• The 3:46 game time marked the fifth-longest game in school history by time.
• The Big Red posted 503 yards of offense, its first contest with at least 500 yards since piling up 569 against Penn on Nov. 9, 2024.
• The team's 346 passing yards marked the 68th 300-yard game in school history.
• The Big Red's 94 offensive plays marked the third time in the past two seasons that it ran at least 90 plays (92 at Bucknell in 2024, 96 at Yale in 2025).
• Cornell's 31 first downs are the most in a game since Cornell had 33 in a a double overtime win against Brown in 2007 and were the most in a game under head coach Dan Swanstrom.
• The Big Red's defense allowed fewer rushing yards than rushing attempts (32 yards on 33 carries) for the first time since it held VMI to -2 rushing yards on 25 carries in 2022.
• The 32 rushing yards allowed marked the sixth time under defensive coordinator Jared Backus that an opponent gave up less than 40 rushing yards in a game.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Freshman Ryan Matulevich set a Cornell freshman record with his 100-yard receiving game, breaking the previous mark of 97 yards by Eric Gallman II at Yale in 2017.
• Matulevich is the first Big Red player to reach 100 receiving yards in his first collegiate start since Davon Kiser posted 145 yards on five catches at Lehigh in the 2023 opener as a sophomore.
• Sophomore Jordan Triplett became the first Big Red running back to score three touchdowns in a game since Chris Walker reached the end zone three times at Columbia on Nov. 12, 2016.
• Triplett also became the second Big Red player to score a pair of overtime touchdowns, joining Brad Kiesendahl against Lafayette in a 41-34 victory on Oct. 18, 1997.
• Junior Garrett Bass-Sulpizio piled up 416 yards of total offense, the 18th 400-yard game in school history and most since Jameson Wang piled up 449 yards vs. Penn in 2024.
• The 416 yards ranks 16th all-time for the Big Red.
• Bass-Sulpizio threw for 346 yards, the 54th 300-yard passing game in school history. The 346 yards ranks as the 23rd-most in a single game.
• Bass-Sulpizio has rushed for a touchdown in four straight games, the first Big Red player to do that since Jameson Wang in 2024. He has five touchdowns over that span.
• Junior defensive back Braylon Howard had a pair of pass breakups, the second time in three games with multiple knockdowns. He now has six in three Ivy games this year and eight overall.
• Junior Johnny Williamson's four tackles for loss are the most by a Big Red player since Taylor Betros also registered four against Dartmouth on Nov. 3, 2012. It was the 16th individual game with at least four tackles since 1983 and is tied for fifth all-time in a single game.
Keith Williams Jr. had an interception in his second straight game, with three overall. The last time a Big Red player had interceptions in multiple games was Brody Kidwell in 2023 (Bucknell and Brown). The last time a Cornell player had three interceptions in the span of two weeks (besides David Jones' three interception game at Penn in 2017) was Nick Gesualdi with one at Harvard in 2016 and two vs. Sacred Heart the following week.
James Reinbold was in the mix for 1.5 sacks, his second game this season in on multiple sacks. The last Big Red player with multiple sacks in multiple games in the same season was Miles Norris in 2014 (against Colgate and Lehigh).
• Senior Matheson Pich, who entered the game without a catch, hauled in six passes for 78 yards.
• Junior All-American tight end Ryder Kurtz had five catches for 81 yards, pushing him to 60 career catches for 782 yards. He is now seven receptions and five yards, respectively, from breaking Cornell tight end records.
• Sophomore K'Adrian McLee had his first career reception.
• Senior Davon Kiser upped his career total to 959 all-purpose yards for the Big Red and is just 41 away form becoming the xx player to hit 1,000 for a career.
• With eight tackles against Brown, senior Damon Barnes upped his career total to 143, good for 74th all-time at Cornell.
• Senior Joey Cheshire added three tackles to his career totals and now stands at 108, tied for 125th all-time and 14 away from joining the top 100.
• With his seven tackles, senior Michael O'Keefe has increased his career total to 93 and is just seven away from becoming the 146th player in the Big Red's 138-year history to hit the century mark for their career.
• Freshman Jonathan Roost's 25-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining in regulation was the 11th field goal in the final minute to win a game or send the contest to overtime in Big Red history. The last time it happened to send a game to OT was when Brad Greenway's 40-yard-field goal with five seconds left split the uprights at Colgate in 2011 to knot the game at 28-28. Colgate won in overtime, 35-28.
