Brown Knocks Field Hockey From Unbeaten Ranks, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown scored early in each half and held off a persistent Cornell offense to earn a 3–1 victory in Ivy League field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field. The Big Red suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 6-1 (2-1 Ivy), while the Bears improved to 5-3 (2-1 Ivy).

Sophomore Vivienne Mueller scored her second goal of the season for the Big Red to tie the game at 1-1 in the first quarter, but  Brown scored just 55 seconds into the game and added goals in the second and fourth quarters to seal the win.

After the Bears' Lexi Pellegrino got on the board in the opening minute a penalty corner, Cornell quickly answered in the 13th minute when Mueller collected a rebound and buried the equalizer off a blast from Olivia Weir. Brown retook the lead early in the second on a penalty stroke by Lucy Adams, then added insurance midway through the fourth on a tip-in by Mia Karine Myklebust following another set piece.

The Bears held a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Cornell senior goalkeeper Jane McNally finished with a career-best seven saves, while Brown's Ellie Parker made four stops in goal.

QUOTABLE

"We have to take our chances. We didn't do that today and Brown did. The story of the game is that they went 3-for-7 on penalty corners and we were 0-for-7. We will regroup and go again on Sunday." -- Andy Smith, Head Coach of Cornell Field Hockey
