SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Junior
Julia Ramsey scored twice in a span of 45 seconds in the fourth quarter to break a 1–1 deadlock, powering Cornell to a 4-1 road victory over Bryant on Sunday afternoon at Cowen Field. COrnell improved to 7-1 on the season, while Bryant slipped to 2-8.
The Big Red rebounded from its first loss of the season on Friday at Brown with a dominant performance, outshooting the Bulldogs 19-2 and earning 12 penalty corners to Bryant's three.
Cornell opened the scoring in the fourth minute when sophomore Uma Käding blasted a penalty corner into the cage off assists from
Annabel Cheveley and Ramsey. Bryant equalized late in the second quarter on a goal from Julie Diderich, the team's lone shot on goal in the contest, but the Big Red controlled play the rest of the way.
Ramsey finally broke through late by striking twice early in the fourth - first in the 50th minute on a set play assisted by
Vivienne Mueller, then again 45 seconds later when she redirected a shot from Käding - to give Cornell a two-goal cushion. Mueller added an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to cap the scoring.
The Big Red didn't allow a shot on goal until the second quarter and didn't concede another the rest of the game. Cornell goalkeepers
Jane McNally and
Tayla Williams combined to face just one shot in the win.
Ramsey added an assist for a five-point afternoon, while Käding and Mueller had a goal and an assist apiece. Cheveley chipped in with one helper.
QUOTABLE
"After a solid start we got bogged down and couldn't seem to find our way until the fourth quarter. After a chat into the fourth it finally clicked for us and we managed to put the game away. Credit to Bryant, they played very well and fought incredibly hard. Special mention to Stella Thibeault who played incredibly well and helped change the game when she was on the field today." -- Andy Smith, Head Coach of Cornell Field Hockey
