Men's Tennis Wraps Weekend at Holmes Cathrall Memorial Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Freshman Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar led the way with three singles victories as the Cornell men's tennis team completed a competitive weekend at Penn State's Holmes Cathrall Memorial Invitational at the Sarni Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

Kumar went 3-1 in singles action, highlighted by straight-set wins over Penn State's Jaden Brady and Michael Wright, and a come-from-behind three-set victory over Florida's Tanapatt Nirundorn. His lone loss came in a tight three-set battle with Columbia's Thiwat Boosarawongse, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.

Freshman Jack Casciato also turned in a standout showing, going 3-1 in singles with wins over opponents from Columbia, Navy and Buffalo. Freshman Nathan Gold posted a pair of victories and pushed a third match to a third set before it went unfinished. Senior Petar Teodorovic added a straight-set win over Penn State's Reiya Hattori to round out Cornell's singles success.

"It was great to see Jack Casciato notching his first wins as a Cornellian, winning three of his four matches over the weekend," said Silviu Tanasiou, the Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis. "It was also great to see Rethin Kumar compete at the level he did, beating starters from Florida's lineup and coming a few points away from beating one of Columbia's top players. It was very encouraging to see how they competed all weekend and something we want to build upon. Now we get ready for regionals, the biggest tournament of the fall."

In doubles, the duo of Kumar and Teodorovic earned two wins on the weekend, including a 6-3 victory over Columbia and a 6-4 triumph over the same pair from Columbia in a rematch. Casciato and Gold added a hard-fought 7-6 win over a Penn State tandem, but fell short in a pair of other close matches.

The Big Red totaled nine singles wins and three doubles victories across three days of competition that included entries from Penn State, Florida, Buffalo, Columbia, and Navy.

Cornell will continue fall play in preparation for the ITA Northeast Regional Championship beginning on Friday, Oct. 10 at Harvard.
