PRINCETON, N.J. - The no. 20-ranked Cornell men's soccer team fell to the Princeton Tigers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Ivy League Championship at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The Big Red dropped to 13-3-2, while the Tigers captured their second consecutive Ivy League title and improved to 15-1-2 on the year.
"It was a tough result today. Going down to another early goal set us back but I thought we did a good job of getting back into the game. We generated some good opportunities over the course of the game, but unfortunately couldn't capitalize.",
John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of men's soccer mentioned.
Sam Vigalante and Liam Beckwith were the Princeton goal-scorers in the game.
Ryan Friedberg made three saves in the contest to keep Cornell within striking distance for the majority of the game. Princeton net-minder Andrew Samuels also collected three saves, but it was all he needed to secure the shutout victory.
Princeton began the scoring early in the game following a free-kick that set up a timely chance for Vigilante to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. At the end of the opening half, Cornell was awarded a penalty-kick.
Kasper Wollstein was unable to make it count as Samuels stopped his third penalty-kick of the season.
As the Big Red made a push to find the equalizer in the second half, Cornell managed a handful of good opportunities from
Blake Donahue and
Aidan Martin but failed to find the right touch in the right moment.
Princeton added the dagger in the 88th minute as Beckwith completed the strike to close out the Big Red and cruise to it's second consecutive Ivy League Tournament victory. The Tigers are the first Ivy League Tournament hosts to win the championship.
"We have had a great season so far and we now get to regroup as we look forward to NCAA selection show tomorrow.", Smith concluded with.
