Three Notch Double Figures as Cornell Defeats Canisius on the Road

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Cornell picked up its second straight road victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Canisius 62-50 behind a balanced offensive attack at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Big Red improve to 2-2 on the season, while Canisius falls to 0-5.  
 
Rachel Kaus led the way with 18 points and two rebounds, finishing 7-for-11 from the floor while adding one assist and two steals. Paige Engels contributed 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Clarke Jackson chipped in 12 points and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Emily Pape finished with nine points and eight rebounds. 
 
Franka Wittenberg led Canisius with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Yasmine Djibril added eight points. Shariah Gailes contributed seven points and four rebounds off the bench. As a team, Canisius shot 47.5 percent from the field with a 27.8 percent mark from behind the arc. 
 
Cornell opened with a 12-10 lead after the first quarter before taking control in the second. The Big Red outscored the Golden Griffins 17-9 in the frame, shooting 46.2 percent from the field while holding Canisius to just 42.9 percent, building a 29-19 halftime advantage. 
 
Canisius responded in the third quarter, shooting 72.7 percent from the field including 50.0 percent from 3-point range. The Golden Griffins outscored Cornell 18-13 in the period to cut the Big Red's lead to 42-37 entering the fourth quarter. Wittenberg scored nine of her 17 points in the third, connecting on three field goals during the stretch. 
 
The home team would make it a one-point game, 44-43, two minutes into the final quarter, but Kaus would respond immediately for Cornell, sparking a 18-7 run to close out the contest. Cornell shot 70.0 percent from the field in the fourth and recorded a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Engels scored six of her 15 points in the fourth, while Jackson made four crucial free throws in the closing minutes to secure the win. 
 
Game Notes 
• Sunday marked the 11th meeting all-time between Cornell and Canisius, with the Big Red winning its third straight to improve to 4-7 in the series.  
• Cornell earned its first back-to-back road wins since defeating Bucknell and Binghamton in back-to-back road contest in the 2023-24 season.  
• Cornell recorded its third-straight game with three or more players in double figures.  
• The Big Red recorded season-highs in points, field goals made, field goal percentage, free throws made, and steals. • Engels' four steals are a season-best for the sophomore and one shy of her career-high. She also set a season-best with 15 points.  
• Kaus matched her season-best with 18 points. She now has 24 career games with double figure points.  
 
Next Up 
Cornell will open the home portion of its schedule with a 6 p.m. contest against Colgate on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.  
 
The Big Red lead the series with the Raiders, 23-19.
